We sailed on the Pride of America last December. It is a great way to see the islands. DEFINITELY make your dinner reservations as soon as you arrive. We did this, which worked out well, but on the seconde day when we tried to reschedule a later reservation, everything was booked.

Having been on other cruises, I would say that this wasn't our best cruise experience. We were absolutely thrilled with the itinerary - the islands are absolutely magical.

We have a very nice balcony cabin on deck 11. We were very happy with the space.

Even though the ship charges the $10 per person per day gratuity, we also gave a tip at the beginning of the week to our cabin steward. I can't guarantee that this was the reason, but we did receive outstanding service all week.

Our favorite tour was the Kona Captain Zodiac tour - one of the best we ever did. The navy boats were a little rough for some, but it truly allowed you to get into areas that larger boats couldn't do. And the snorkeling was amazing - very beautiful coral and tons of fish. (so much better than on Maui at the Molikini Crater). We also loved the helicopter tour we did on Kaui with interisland helicopters. It was on the expensive side, but an unbelievable experience. We flew for about 45 minutes, then landed at a private waterfall for swimming and lunch - and then flew back. We rented cars on the rest of the islands.

In Kaui, you can walk just past the little stores to the Marriott hotel - a wonderful beach area to spend the last day before you sail mid-afternoon back to Honolulu,

In the evening, we really enjoyed hanging out in a small little bar on deck 13 where they have a guitar player who does sing-alongs. It was a lof of fun. The servie was great and it was a lot of fun singing along with of our requests. The area doesn't get much notice until later in the week.

If you have any extra time on Oahu, we would highly recommend a drive to the North Shore. It is so different than what you see in Honolulu.

Overall, I would give the food and service an average rating. It didn't ruin the vacation, but it was disappointing with the money we spent.

Please let me know if you have any specific questions.

Thank-you so much for answering me...I know some of the restaurants are free and some cost money....But they really don't tell you how much...Do they charge very much? I really appreciate you answering us..Yesterday I was going to switch to a cabin with a balcony and the Expedia cruise specialist said I would like level 4 on the boat better because it's ruffer up on lever 10 which was all he had open ..We were already on oceanview on level 4....So was he giving me the run around?

Do you make reservations for breakfast lunch and dinner?

That is what I didn't know also...

And which dinningrooms were the best if you can remember...

I really appreciate it...

Hugs,

Deb

You only need to make reservations for dinners. I believe the charge for was between $10 and $20 per person depending on the restaurant. If you like sushi, we would highly recommend the sushi bar. We also really enjoyed the teppanyaki (a Benihana type setting where they cook the food in front of you). While the food was good at the Jefferson Bistro, it was 2+ hours for the meal.

We ate at the buffet each day for breakfast and had lunch on the islands.

If it is in your budget, we would highly recommend getting the balcony room on the port side of the ship. We were on deck 11 and did not notice a lot of motion. Since we were near the front of the ship, we had a very large balcony (probably could have fit eight people comfortably). On the day the ship leaves Kauai, we sailed along the NaPali coastline and were able to watch the beauty from our balcony - truly breathtaking. (The ship was not able to go past the volcano on the Big Island due to "weather"). I would enjoy the balcony in the morning when my husband wanted to sleep in a little (I am a very early riser).

Let me know if you have other questions. Good luck with your planning.

We (a group of 17 from Lou. KY) are going on the Pride of America in April, 2007. I am looking forward to your report! I am apprehensive about the Freestyle dining, as it seems to create a lot of controversy. Please share your opinion about the dining experience. I was wondering if people are as dressed up for dinner as they are on the Caribbean cruises, and also any NCL shore excursions that you take.

Thanks

momwithgreatboss - we were very lucky that we had great weather our entire trip - which they say is unusual for December. We had temperatures in the 80s and sunny skies each day. I hope we are as fortunate this year!
