The 2017 Yellowstone construction schedule is posted. There are two major impacts on visitors.

This is the 3rd year (out of six) of totally reconstructing the roadway from Norris to Mammoth (actually to Swan Lake Flat). Once again there will be nightly closures of the road and then a full closure in the fall for 4 weeks. Here is the official word from the NPS web site:

"Norris to Mammoth: expect 30-minute delays between Roaring Mountain and the Indian Creek Campground beginning April 21, 2017. From June 1 to September 10, this section of road will be closed during the night (10 pm to 7 am). From September 10 to October 6, this section of road will be closed to all traffic (day and night). Norris and Indian Creek campgrounds will remain open."

The second area of construction impacting visitors this year is at Canyon, where they are doing a multi-year reconstruction of the overlooks, trails and parking areas.

"Canyon Area: the Brink of Upper Falls and Inspiration Point are closed for the season."

I still have not seen any definitive word about when the construction on the Grand Prismatic Spring overlook will be completed and the Fairy Falls trail re-opened. I presume they will announce a date once they get back to work on that project this spring and see how quickly things progress.

As always, thanks for posting this. I'll go ahead and ask the Help Center for it to be a sticky at the top of the Yellowstone forum.

I hope there is not the early snow issues this year over Dunraven while the Norris-Mammoth road is closed!

Thanks so much for the heads up on this.

Could you clarify about the fairy falls trail - does that mean the whole trail, including the parking lot will be inaccessible? Looking at the map last night I was musing about whether it is possible to park at the fairy falls trailhead and then walk part of that route to the midway geyser basin if that parking lot is full, but presumably that won't be possible if construction is happening?

There isn't access on a trail from the Fairy Falls trailhead to Midway Geyser Basin.

too late to edit: That trail runs on what I call the back side of the basin, not through it. The overlook will have that parking even more packed, which I am not sure is possible, as people parked all over the road illegally. Not sure what the plan is for parking-maybe Bill knows?

Great info thanks. But now I've changed my itinary and considering cancelling my trip this year. My new itinary :

Sept. 10 GTNP

SEPT 11 old faithful lodge

Sept 12 lake Jackson lodge

Sept 13 Cooke city. ( bear tooth hwy to red lodge and back)

Sept 14 Cooke city

Sept 15 island park via canyon to west entrance

Sept 16 drive to SLC to fly home

My question is will I be able to drive between lake Jackson and tower? Also where do you get the road info? I've checked the nps.gov wed site and also called the recorded message number both only gave current conditions but nothing about sept 2017. Any info or suggestions would be helpful. THANKS

Cliff, you might want to start your own thread if you have questions about your itinerary, which I am sure we would all have comments on. Let us know if you are flying in to SLC as well as date and time. You're doing a lot of zig-zagging.

Sorry I did find the 2017 road constructions on the gov website. But I'm still not sure about the canyon area. So now I will miss Mammoth Hot Springs, inspiration point and brink of falls. Should I wait until next year?

Sorry Pam my question was really about road closures. I will star a new thread about my itinary when I figure out the roads. Thanks
