Beartooth Highway

We have desided to move our trip to YSNP to June 9 -June 18. Will Beartooth Highway be open at that time? Would it be better to do that portion of the trip on the way from Billings to Yellowstone area or from Cody back up to Billings for the flight out?

Thanks

Amy

Hi CabinCouple,

The Beartooth Highway should be open just before Memorial Day. For more info, here is their web site: http://www.beartoothhighway.com/

I would drive the BT on your way down from Billings.

If you have time on your way back, you can take the Chief Joesph Highway from Cody, link up with the Beartooth and head back to Billings.

It is wonderful country out there, enjoy your trip!

Yes, best way to drive is from east to west (Red Lodge to Cooke City. Steepest part is at the Red Lodge side and a better drive uphill than down hill. Plus you'll have the fantastic overlooks in front of you driving this way. Make stops at the various viewpoints and enjoy. Driving east to west is best done in the morning to avoid glare. For the same reason it's best to drive from west to east in the afternoon.
