Road closures in Yellowstone

Hi, looking for some advice. I'm driving from Big Sky - Teton Village / Jackson in a week or so (two centre ski holiday) and noticed we'd be near Yellowstone. Could anyone advise if it is possible to drive through the park at this time of year, or are all the roads closed for the winter?

Many thanks in advance,

Dave

i'll defer to the local people but i'm fairly certain that the roads inside the park will be closed until sometime in may.

if you want to see yellowstone i'd take one of the snowcoach tours that are available from most of the entrance towns.

Most access to the park now is through over-snow vehicles, but this link will show you what roads are open to wheeled vehicles during winter (and it is definitely winter)

The north road from Gardiner MT to Cooke City MT is open year round and is the only access to Cooke City in the winter. The rest of the park roads closed to over snow vehicles on Sunday and will reopen to regular wheeled vehicles on April 18th this year.

Let me add a little information. You might want to pull up this map of Yellowstone Park so it makes more sense-

nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm

The only road that is drivable into Yellowstone until April 20th is the one that comes down from Livingston, MT into Gardiner, MT and then into the park at Mammoth Hot Springs. Probably about 5 hours at this time of year. You can then drive from Mammoth through Tower Junction east through Lamar Valley and to Silver Gate and Cooke City, MT. Beyond that point the road is closed until at least the end of May.

The west entrance through West Yellowstone (about 2 1/2 hours from Jackson)is closed for vehicle traffic until April 18th. However, if you like to bicycle, you can go in from that gate the weekend of March 22 & 23rd and the weekend of March 29 & 30th, and then every day starting April 4th...this is an update to the information on the website. Usually this entrance opens earlier but this year the park is rebuilding the gate where you drive through and moving it several hundred yards into the park. The old gate is a historic monument and the entire roof has to be moved from the old building and gates to the new one. So, there are temporary closures while big cranes move the roof!

If you like to bicycle, you can ride from the West Yellowstone west entrance to Madison Junction then north to Mammoth Hot Springs. (long ride). The road down to Old Faithful will be closed until April 18th (due to construction activities and early spring bear activity). However, on the ride in from West to Madison, you can still see elk, bison, coyotes. There is a pair of bald eagles in about six miles who are building a huge new nest just off the south side of the road. And, there has been a bobcat hunting along the Madison River to the north.

Plus, you don't need to buy a park pass if you bike or hike in this time of year. You can rent bicycles in West Yellowstone. The only vehicles on the roads are the park ones.

That may be more information than you wanted, but other people might be interested in coming into the Park in this unique way!

Great stuff, Yellowstonefan - thank you. I hadn't acutally considered taking a bike ride through the park, but it sounds like a fantastic idea. Many thanks!
