you could fly into Denver. Head north to Mt Rushmore first (will be about a 6 and 1/2 hour trip) From there, head east to yellowstone, south to the Tetons, back across Wyoming/Colorado and down to Rocky Mtn natl park (at Estes Park) Estes Park will be within an hour and 1/2 to Denver for a flight home. 14 days should be plenty of time to do that circle and allow several days for the major stops.

The closest airport options for YNP would are either Bozeman or Billings MT. Flying into Salt Lake City UT instead of Denver would cut your drive time to 5-6 hours.

However, if you want to see Mt. Rushmore too, Denver is probably your best choice.

In 2008 we flew in and out of Denver and did the Black Hills/Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood, Devils Tower, Yellowstone National Park, Cody, and Cheyenne in 10 days. With 14 days you can also do the Grand Tetons and possibly Rocky Mt. National Park. We had already been to RMNP several times so didn't include it in our 2008 trip. In 2007 we had toured the western part of Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. Watch the fares and you can get good car rental rates out of Denver if you book early in the year for your summer vacation.

Smaller regional airports will be more expensive, but might save you time. I would fly into Jackson Hole airport. There are a couple of reasons. It's close, and you can visit a great little town-Jackson, WY, the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone.

Second is car rental. Many of the smaller regional airports car rentals LIMIT YOUR MILES. There are a lot of miles to drive in the west and you don't want to get caught out paying per mile at the end of your trip. The car companies at Jackson Hole had UNLIMITED miles on the rentals - miles can add up out west.

You are going to need to do the math. I prefer Jackson (location and car terms) to Billings, Helena or Missoula as a destination and i save a day of driving from the major airport by going regional....

If you want to see more of the west, Salt Lake City or Denver would be your main choices. SLC is about 5-6 hour drive to yellowstone. Denver at least 9 hours. Both Denver and Salt Lake should have unlimited miles options on rentals...and more selection.

I would check flights ending at West Yellowstone (WYS airport code). It is a smaller airport that connects with larger flights, but just two miles from the west entrance to the park. (rental cars, lodging, etc all there or close by). Flights are often the same or cheaper than larger airports where you will have to drive distances to get to Yellowstone.

If you plan on seeing mount rushmore and yellowstone, definetely your best option is flying into Denver. Another option would be to fly into Denver and connect into Rapid City. It is only about 2 hours from Rapid City to Mount Rushmore, and about 6-7 hours drive to Yellowstone from Rapid City. The drive along will also let you see Devil's Tower if you want.

If you book the trip all together, its likely only $40 or so roundtrip more than flying directly into Denver (book on UA from LHR and put it straight through to RAP).

Hope that helps and enjoy the trip!

One correction to the above post - we just returned from a cross-country trip, during which we spent a night in Rapid City SD. From there, it was just about a 30-minute drive to Mt. Rushmore.

If you do go to that area, the Badlands east of Rapid City are worth a drive-through also.
