weather varies in Sept. Last fall, we were there the 1st week of Sept. Beautiful weather-- sunny and nice in the day, 40's at night. 2 weeks later, I saw on the news that Dunraven Pass was closed from snow.

Most recommend West Yellowstone for a place to stay outside of the park. Call Xanterra tho-- often there are cancellation so perhaps you can get inside the park. Canyon area is central and a good spot to stay. We stayed there 3 nights (in the western cabins) and one night at Old Faithful Snow lodge to explore the thermals. Worked out very well.

Best places to see? My favorites were the Old Faithful thermal area, the lower falls at canyon, Hayden valley (lots of wildlife) and Mammoth. Mammoth is very pretty and in Sept, it will be over run with elk in rut. We watched a bull doing his bugling routine and amassing his harem. :)

If you have 4 days then stay one night in Gardiner or Cooke City for northern part of park and three days in West Yellowstone for the rest of the park. Keep calling Xanterra for cancellations in the park. West Yellowstone check out Three Bear Lodge. Cooke City check out Super 8. Gardiner has Abrasoka and BW. This website gives a map of the must sees of the park to help you plan. YNP is huge- the size of a small state. Enjoy your trip planning.

We were in Yellowstone last September. If you want to see pictures go to

We stayed in West Yellowstone at the Best Western Weston Inn and in Cooke City at the Elkhorn Lodge. Both were fine and good locations. The weather was very nice the entire time that we were there...Sept 9 through Sept 18. The mornings are a little cold but it warms up quickly.

The parks are lovely that time of year and most places are still open. Hiking is great and sometimes you are completely by yourself after a few hundred feet. Have fun!
