where do you recommend doing a rafting trip?

Hi we will be spending time in Yellowstone national park and Grand Teton (jacskon hole) in june and I was wondering where to do our rafting trip. We are two families 11 in total, ages 10. 13, 17, 20 and late 40s.

When will you be going? Whitewater or scenic rafting? Mild whitewater or white-knuckle?

If a scenic float trip then go with Barker Ewing who does their float trips totally in the Grand Tetons NP. Very experienced, AAA rated and doing them for over 50 years. Very scenic and we saw lots of wildlife.

We have done rafting before, but level 2 difficulty, we were thinking on something medium difficulty, not just floating, we have one 10 year old girl and two 13 year old boys, I don't know if there is age limit for this alternative.

Thank you!

Several companies do white water rafting. There is another Barker-Ewing, Dave Hansen and a couple of others.

Hopefully someone who has done one will post all the info for you.

The best rafting is going to be in Jackson Hole.

River trips come in two categories: whitewater and scenic float trips. The whitewater trips go through the Snake River gorge south of Jackson. You ride through a deep, beautiful gorge and run rapids of medium intensity. This is suitable for all ages, you get wet (they give you a wetsuit), it's exciting and wild, and everyone has a good time experiencing the thrill and beauty of the river.

The float trips are through a 10-mile stretch of the Snake River lying inside GTNP. It's a lot less exciting, but much calmer, with views of the Teton Range as you float by, with a good chance to see wildlife and take pictures.

There are a bunch of companies that do an excellent job on both whitewater and float trips, among them:

Barker-Ewing http://www.barkerewing.com/

Dave Hansen http://www.davehansenwhitewater.com/

Sands http://www.sandswhitewater.com/

Lewis and Clark http://www.lewisandclarkriverrafting.com/

Check with them for times of day you want to take the trip and compare prices. If your goal is to see wildlife, dawn and dusk are the best times, especially for elk and mule deer.

Mad River mostly does just whitewater. http://mad-river.com/

We did the float trip in GTNP north of Moose with Triangle X Ranch about 4 years ago. I highly recommend them for the float trip. We had a bbq dinner before we left and saw many wonderful animals along the shore - even a black bear crossing the river right behind us.

We did the white water raft trip south of Jackson with Barker Ewing in 2009. Very mild rapids-maybe 2's and 3's. We were not given wet suits but really did not need them in July. It was an OK trip, but in my mind, not a true white water experience. People were kind of partying as they went along in their own rafts/tubes. But it would be good for the younger people in your group as there is nothing really scary about the experience.
