Beartooth Highway in a minivan

We are a couple of retirees who plan to drive from Seattle to Chicago in early June 2006. We'd like to take the Beartooth Highway, since it looks spectacular, but we wonder whether our vehicle is suitable. Would it be reckless to try it in our family minivan (regular front-wheel drive; regular tires). Is a 4X vehicle recommended?

We are intrepid but, I hope, not stupid! What is the advice of seasoned Beartooth travellers?

You are fine in a minivan-it's a regular road, not off-road at all. We drove it several years ago in my lovely Ford Tempo and would have taken it last August except parts were closed due to mudslides in the spring. We did drive the St. Joseph in our minivan this year (as well as the open part of the Beartooth) and it was fine. Just typical mountain roads-winding and slower speed limits but you want to soak up the scenery anyways. Only advice-if you get someone behind you who you can tell is itching to get by-use the pullouts and let them pass-you'll enjoy it more. Same holds true once you get into the Park-don't let anybody hurry you up-take your time and let the impatient pass you by.
