Yellowstone and Gardiner in the rain

The forecast looks rainy for a few days during our visit. We will see Old Faithful and the center there on the way from Jackson Hole to Gardiner. Any ideas for things to see ( indoors) at Mammoth, Roosevelt and Gardiner would be appreciated. Thanks!

Wow, not much in Gardiner. I would probably drive the North end of the loop road out to Tower/Roosevelt or Lamar and see if you can see some animals.

You might go to the Yellowstone Heritage and Research Center and see if they have a tour today.

It is behind the high school. To get to it, Head west on the main drag like you were going to turn under the Roosevelt Arch. Instead of turning, keep straight and head down toward the school. This building is behind it.

You could also divert out to West Yellowstone and go to the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center if you don't find enough to do to take up time at Old Faithful. (Sit on 2nd floor deck of OF Inn and have ice cream, coffee or other libation!).

Personally on a rainy day, I just drive the park and look for animals.

As you may have guessed, since Yellowstone's sights are largely outdoors you're pretty messed up if the weather is crummy. There's a visitor center at Mammoth and a few shops to hold you over in Gardiner.

If there's just an issue of light rain all is not lost, as you can always walk around a little with rain ponchos. If lightning and thunder start, on the other hand, that's a game changer. It is unsafe to be either under trees or present yourself as the tallest thing out on boardwalks etc. for reasons you can imagine. If that happens, get to your car and/or the nearest public building depending on where you are ASAP (keeping space between your party as you move quickly, as lightning likes hitting clusters) - and unfortunately you're in lockdown.

Thanks! We will have two grandsons 4 and 8 so the Grizzley and Wolf Center might be a good option if the weather is bad. Thanks for all the advice.

Let us know what you wind up doing if it does rain. There have been lots of *what to do on a rainy day* questions lately, and it would be useful to others with kids along to see how you kept them entertained!

Beg to differ. Just dress for the rain and don't let it bother you. Enjoy the smaller crowds. Lightning, however, is devoutly to be avoided.

Enjoy the park and all its weather!
