Chief Joseph and Beartooth Hwy

We will be driving from Cody up the Chief Joseph Highway to Beartooth Hwy and on into the park. Once we hit the Beartooth, should we turn right and detour toward Red Lodge then do a u-turn and head back down into the park? Or should we just turn left and go on down to the park? Is that portion of the highway scenic enough to warrant that detour? And if so, how much time should we allow? Thanks for your input.

Definitely turn right and go at least to Rock Creek Vista. For me it was the most beautiful drive I have experienced in the US. The only road I would rank above that is the gorgeous (but dangerous) east coast highway in Taiwan. Give yourself an hour or two, depending on how many times you stop for photos.

Definitely make the right turn and go at least as far as the Rock Creek Vista. It's only about 35 miles but is very scenic. If you have the time to spare in your trip you might want to go all the way to Red Lodge which would add another 20 miles each way..

If you do not turn right when you reach the junction of the Chief Joseph Highway and the Beartooth Highway you will not see anything of Beartooth Pass. Like the previous posters said....you can turn around at Rock Creek Vista (there are bathrooms there so its a nice place to take a break).

If you're hungry by that time you can drive all the way into Red Lodge for lunch. The only other option is to wait until you get to Cooke City to eat unless you bring a cooler/picnic lunch. If that is the case I would suggest eating lunch at either Island Lake Campground or Beartooth Lake Campground. You will pass both after you turn right on the Beartooth Highway. Beartooth Lake is before (west) the "Top of the World Store" and Island Lake is after (east) the store.
