Which are the best campgrounds inside Yellowstone ?

Hi,

We would appreciate some recommendations regarding which campgrounds to stay at while visiting Yellowstone NP.

Campgrounds which are clean, and located in or near the interesting parts of the park.

Thank you.

One of your other posts said you were visiting mid-September. A lot of the campgrounds will already be closed by then or in the process of being closed. Will you be tent camping or in a recreational vehicle?

These are campgrounds inside Yellowstone where you can call and make reservations along with their closing dates:

Canyon- 9/3 *the most centrally located in the park with the most amenities

Bridge Bay-9/9 *nearest showers 4 miles away at Fishing Bridge

Grant -9/23 *ok if you're coming in from the south entrance for one night, way too south of anything else to make it a base. Has showers on site

Madison- 10/21 *good for Old Faithful and the west side of the park. You can use it as a base for other parts of the park but it makes for a long drive each day. 14 miles from the town of West Yellowstone which makes it good for access to grocery store. No showers on site

Fishing Bridge RV Campground- 9/23 *hard sided only no tents allowed

The following are first-come, first-served campgrounds where you can not make reservations. There are no services at these. Some have flush toilets but most have pit toilets.

Lewis Lake- 11/4 *great campground but way too south to use for a base

Norris- 9/24 *fantastic campground and located in a relatively central location for the park given the time of year you will be there

Mammoth- open all year *great for the northern part of the park, way too far from the rest of the park to use as a base. 5 miles from Gardiner and grocery store. This will be the warmest campground in the park.

Tower- 9/21 *another great one for the northern part of the park (Lamar Valley). There is also road construction between Tower and Mt Washburn (on the way to Canyon over Dunraven Pass) which you will have to deal with. The entire road closes for road construction on 9/22.

Indian Creek 9/4 *very nice campground but will be close and is in the northwestern side of the park

Pebble Creek -9/24 * fantastic campground but in extreme northeastern part of park

Slough Creek- 10/31 *another fantastic campground but very hard to get into as it is at the beginning of Lamar Valley

I've been camping in Yellowstone multiple times each year for 30 years and have never had an experience where a campground was not "clean". How many days are you staying in the park? What entrance are you coming in from and what entrance will you be leaving from? Do you want to stay in the same campground or are you ok with breaking your camp down and moving to two or more campgrounds during your stay?

I would choose Madison because it gives you easy access to Old Faithful area & it can be reserved ahead of time. It's quite a dance to get there early & search for 1st-come sites. Plus, it will be open if indeed you are coming mid-September.

You can reserve campgrounds here:

I like to get a campground on the east side of the park too for half of my trip. It depends when you will be there. Bridge Bay, but may be closed when you come, is nice if you specify in the request box upper loops. Fishing Bridge is more expensive & an RV lot with RVs fairly close together.

Deb, thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed reply. Wow !

We would like to travel in the park starting from the northern part to the southern part, as we will continue either to Grand Tetons NP or towards Salt Lake City.

We plan on staying about 5 days in the park, maybe more. We don't mind changing camping sites during our stay and even prefer staying at different sites in order not to spend hours driving back and forth each day.

We would appreciate your recommendations.

Good grief, deb, that was awesome!

metayelet, I think all the campgrounds are kept clean, and there is no uninteresting part of the park. One thing to consider, though, is the availability of each campground. At some you can make reservations, at some you cannot. And different campgrounds fill up at different times each day. Fortunately, the fill-up times and current availability is information that you can get at the entrance when you enter the park. If you can be flexible it will help a great deal. I would also suggest starting with a reserved night or two to assure that you can stay inside the park while you firm up your plans for the rest of your stay.

ENJOY!
