Yellowstone June 2013

Hi we have never been to Yellowstone. We are thinking of flying from Southern Ca. to Salt lake and renting a car to drive in. Where would you recomend we stay coming from that direction? We were thinking of staying outside the park to help our budget out? We will be there 5 days and would love some advice on what we must see. Our dates are June 16- June 20. It will myself my husband and our 3 teenage boys. The drive is just to long from CA so we thought breaking it up was a good idea but we are on a budget!! Thanks you for any help.

First, review the Xanterra website to find the least expensive lodging; Frontier Cabins, probably, different locations inside the park. It's a "busy" site, so here's a place the kids can help, each looking at different sections/lodging in the park; gets them involved for the great trip ahead.

Second, call Xanterra and tell them what you need and where you'd like to lodge. I suggest Canyon and Lake for their "centrallity" (it's a huge park, minimize driving if that's important; backtracking is not a bad thing in YNP). Or, Old Faithful village for the west side, Roosevelt or Mammoth for the north "side".

Third, if you cannot find suitable lodging, go to the TA Forum Pages for West Yellowstone and Gardiner, both in Montana (not Wyoming). They are adjacent to the park's west and north entrances, respectively. Select "Hotels" for each city to see the reviews and, in some cases, rates.

Fourth, if you get lodging inside the park for some, if not all, of your days, reserve lodging in those two cities for the balance of your days. Keep trying Xanterra and if you get park lodging, cancel the other reservations. Make sure you know their cancellation policies.

I'd balance lodging rates against the amount of driving you'll be doing, and that gives an advantage to inside the park lodging.

Rent a car large enough for you all plus a cooler for beverages and snacks or picnicking. You won't want to leave an area just to hit a cafeteria, just when you see wildlife or are in the middle of a geyser area!

So, does your 5 days include your arrival and departure days?

It is a 5-6 hour drive from SLC to Yellowstone. What would work well is to drive up I15 to Idaho Falls, then across on US20 to West Yellowstone. You can stay in West Yellowstone or if you want to go really cheap, there are cabins with community baths in the park that are pretty cheap. They were $72/night last year, not sure what this year's price is. Look at Xanterra.com (and only book thru them, don't book thru a 3rd party) and look at Old Faithful, Mammoth, and Roosevelt. There are cabins at Canyon and Lake but not sure if there are the cheapest ones there.

We always recommend you bring a cooler to the park and stock with lunch, snacks and beverages in case you are watching something very interesting and don't want to drive an hour to the nearest restaurant!

We usually recommend 3 or 4 days in Yellowstone and 2 days in Grand Tetons. You might want to stay 3 days in West Yellowstone and 2 days in Grand Tetons. Unless you have a late afternoon flight back to LA, you will probably want to spend the last night in SLC.

Pam

One more thought: Add the price of gas and the value of your time driving to and from lodging outside the park, and lodging INSIDE the park suddenly looks a lot better.
