2013 road closures or delays

My husband and I are visiting YNP mid August and staying

at Canyon Lodge. We were hoping to spend a lot of time in Tower

area and especially Lamar Valley. Does anyone know what the

construction closures and delays will be like on the road from Canyon to in August 2013? There are no cabins available at

Tower during that period. We thought Canyon would be a convenient location for the whole trip!

Thank you

I don't see that it has been updated as of yet for 2013

Canyon is a very good location, very central.

You might well find good wildlife sightings in Hayden as well as Lamar Valley.

Delays are fairly well managed in the park.

Buy a cooler upon arrival. It'll be warm and, besides, you'll want to "stay out" rather than have to drive a fair distance just to refuel.

Here's advice from many who have been there:

Thank you for your suggestions!

I guess I'll just have to wait and keep checking the YNP website

for updated closures and expected delays for 2013.

Until then, does anyone know what the road situation was during August 2012

on the road from Canyon to Roosevelt/Tower Junction?

That might give us a good idea of what might happen in August 2013.

In the worst case scenario, if that road is closed during the day, how long

does it take to go the long way around?

Thanks again for you help.

We went over the pass last August and had no problems. It was about 4 pm. It was a Sunday though, if I remember correctly they stop construction on the weekends. If you're going on a week day there might be delays, maybe up to 30 minutes is the usual I believe?

If you have to go all the way around, I would allow 2-3 hours.

If you do want to stay at Roosevelt, just keep checking the website and calling Xanterra for cancellations. Availability changes all the time.

IIRC they closed the road at night for construction and it was open with some delays during the day until after Labor Day weekend, then closed completely. more frequent visitors may have a better idea of how much remains to be done?

Since the road was open during the day and closed at night for

construction in 2012, do any of you know when the road opened

during the day and closed at night? I ask that because we were

also hoping to go to the Old West Cookout at Roosevelt which takes

place from about 4:30 - 8:00 pm. I'd hate to spend 2-3 hours trying

to drive back to Canyon the long way in the dark due to a dusk closure!

Thank you all!

IIRC, it closed about 11PM. They would have been cognizant of the fact that folks would need to make their way home from Roosevelt. There were a number of people last year who planned to do the cookout and return to the Canyon area and I don't recall anyone posting afterward that there was a road issue.

I believe it reopened at 7AM.

You are looking at extremes re: closures when the traffic is only delayed. The longest delay I recall was a 30 minute delay until a lane was opened in "our" direction. If roads are entirely closed to through traffic, it will be stated on the park website, at all of the ranger stations and visitor centers and on the roads themselves.
