Which entrance is best in Mid - late May or early June

We are travelling from Australia mid April, visiting Colorado: Steamboat Springs, Denver Boulder Estes Park THEN on to Virginia, Boston, Quebec We want to return & visit Yellowstone flying from wherever we are to a close airport where we hope to rent a car. We'd like to spend 3-4 days IN the park and wonder "What's the best way to do this to get most out of it" AND which entrance would enable us to do that? All advice appreciated.

Given your situation Jackson would probably be the best as you're literally in Grand Teton National Park when you land so easy access to the park. Rent a car and drive into the park for 2-3 nights then spend your final day exploring Grand Teton, staying in Jackson and departing the next day.

Billings and Bozeman are reasonable gateways on the north side of the park but not as efficient as Jackson. Salt Lake City is the closest truly major airport, but it's a 5-6 hour drive so you'll lose time on your short schedule.

Any reason you're not hitting the park before you fly east?

Have fun

I agree with tumbleweed that Jackson is the most convenient airport for visiting rand Teton National Park.

But if your interest is in Yelklowstone, I would recommend Bozeman, with good road access to either the wst side or north side of YNP. However, note that the first step in planning a visit to YNP is securing lodging, preferably in the park. Use only Xanterra, the official vendor. Once your lodging is secured, move on to planning your days.

ENJOY!

We are kind of tied in with timeshare availability. When we return to Denver from Steamboat Springs, we have 4 days in Colorado (21-25 April) before flying DENVER to WASHINGTON. We thought that there wouldn't be access into the park from Jackson at that time - but maybe we have it wrong? If there is access from Jackson then perhaps we could fly there on the 21st or 22nd (depending on flt times as we do not get back to Denver until about 2.30pm). We had intended to have a look around Boulder, Fort Collins, Cheyenne & Estes Park in the 4 days. We have 1 nights accommodation booked in Washington, we pick up a rental car then spend a week at The Summit Resort in Massanutten. We might take another resort in that area.

ANOTHER QUESTION...Will the park roads be open from Jackson at that time and what are driving conditions likely to be at that time.

This is such a great community site - full of helpful advice from people who know. Many thanks.

I was kind of confused because your title indicates you will be entering Mid-late May or early June, but now I see the text indicates you are considering a visit in April 21-25. If the April dates are correct, then the park is not opening this year until April 26 due to budget issues. The only road open is across the northern end of the park from Mammoth to Cooke City. You would be able to drive thru Lamar Valley which has a lot of wildlife activity and you would be able to see the Mammoth area, but you would not be able to access the rest of the park.

Here is the link to the official opening dates page.
