Driving from Salt Lake City to Yellowstoe for 6 day visit

6 of us in our family are visiting Yellowstone National Park. We are flying to Salt Lake City and driving to yellow stone. We want to rent a nice home for a week in Aug. 9-15 or 16th.

We would like recommendations for places to visit and any rental home recommendations near the park. We would not like to drive too far daily.

Try VBRO to locate a rental. Look in/around West Yellowstone and Gardiner. Beware of the description near to or convenient to Yellowstone. Sometimes that might mean an hour or more to some people. You could also check out Cooke City/Silver Gate.

Your best bets for finding a house/cabin would be to look in West Yellowstone or Gardiner. Can check here on TA or use vrbo or homeaway. Niece and her family have rented a cabin in West Yellowstone in both winter and summer.

I have seen some new cabins advertised in West Yellowstone- so might check them out-

See the Chamber of Commerce websites for Lodging.

Google "Lodging" in each city. For example, for West Yellowstone: https://www.google.com/search?q=west+yellowstone+lodging&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS453US453&oq=west+yellowstone+lodging&aqs=chrome.0.57j60j5j65j0l2.7117j0&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Here's a list of home/apartment rental websites (some were mentioned above):

Airbnb.com

Vrbo.com

Vacationrentals.com

Homeaway

What do you mean by "places to visit"? Outside the park? The park will keep you pretty busy, but I'd go to Cody for a long day's visit including: Buffalo Bill Center of the West A fascinating world class complex (with cafeteria). The center consists of five museums and a research library on one site that include exhibits on Yellowstone National Park, Western Art, Plains Indians, Firearms and on William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Plan on at least three hours. For all ages. http://www.bbhc.org/home/

Another long day's drive, Grand Teton National Park.

But, you said you don't want to drive too far daily.

Thank you all for very useful and informative replies. We are planning to first go to Jackson Hole for 2 nights and visit Grand Teton and then drive to Yellowstone. Which would be the closest entrance to Yellowstone? After 5 nights we plan to drive to Mt. Rushmore and drive back to Salt Lake City to go home to CA.

After carefully studying several maps, my impression is that the south entrance is closest.

A lot of people stay in West Yellowstone because it has better choice of restaurants and hotels/cabins if can find no in park lodging. West Yellowstone is at the west entrance to the park.
