Best Route From Canyon to Mammoth Springs

Is it best to go from Canyon Village to Tower Falls, Roosevelt over to Mammoth Springs or

to take the road from Canyon Village over to Norris and up to Mammoth Springs? I'm concerned about construction delay around Tower Falls. What are the pros/cons of what to see on each route?

We went through the construction in late June (around 9:30 - 10 AM) and the delay wasn't too bad at all. Maybe it gets worse by mid-day/afternoon. When we were there, the construction was right at Tower Falls parking lot.

The road over Dunraven (to Tower Fall) is twistier and to me is prettier, altho less so with the construction stuff going on. It also depends on what you have planned for the day and whether you are returning to Canyon, if so you can go one way and come back the other. Really, it is not going to make much difference either way.

We waited at Tower Falls at minimum 20 minutes 2 weeks ago, late morning.

I agree with D0bby. It isn't going to make much difference, and if you can go one way and come back the other way, so much the better. Most of the times I have gone through the construction area it hasn't been too bad, especially on the weekends. ENJOY!

Factor in what you would like to see along the way if you are only traveling one-way. A drive through Yellowstone is never just about getting from Point A to Point B. Each route has distinct and very different sights and places to stop along the way.

Tower and Roosevelt have places to purchase food; the route through Norris does not. Dunraven Pass is quite scenic but going via Norris you have the opportunity to see the geyser basin and there are lots of picnic areas for lunch if you pack or buy one in advance.

Study the official park map, if you have not done so already, to look at the sights along each route. Here's a page where you can download the large official map in Adobe Acrobat PDF format (11.7 MB) and also some smaller ones:

www.nps.gov/hfc/cfm/carto-detail.cfm…

From reading recent trip reports and the above comments, a short traffic delay should not be the determining factor in your choice of route from Canyon to Mammoth.
