Drive NE to Cody via Beartooth

I am planning on hiking Mount Washburn (start at 8am) on my last morning in Yellowstone. After lunch at Tower Fall General Store, I want to drive to Cody via the Beartooth Highway out of the NE entrance. How long will it take me to do this drive with a few stops for the views. If I start the drive no later than 1pm at Tower, will I be able to get to Cody before the rodeo starts at 7pm? Thank you.

A lot of folks drive the Beartooth Hwy to Rock Creek Vista, turn around, drive back over the same stretch back to Chief Joseph Scenic Hwy & take that to Cody, in order to get both scenic drives.

It's 1+ hr depending on wildlife jams from Roosevelt to the northeast entrance;2 hrs from there to Rk Ck Vista;

2 hrs back to Chief Joseph;2hrs Chief Joseph Hwy to Cody. So it would be pushing it to try to do that IMHO.

What you could do is drive the entire Beartooth Hwy from the northeast entrance to Red Lodge. Then take the Belfry Hwy 308-72-120 down to Cody which is also a stunning drive in its own way.

1+ hr from Roosevelt to northeast entrance; 2.5 hr Beartooth Hwy to Red Lodge; 1+ hr from Red Lodge via Belfry to Cody. Not much leeway for stops.

These are all just my rough estimates since, although I've driven these a lot living in Red Lodge, I don't drive with a stop watch in hand LOL.

Here's the map to show how it all interfaces:

Can't you hike Mt W. the day before so as to have time to drive Beartooth & Chief J? What's your Y-stone itinerary??

One more question... what date?

Here's the Chief Joseph Scenic Hwy info:

yellowstoneparknet.com/scenic_drives/chief_j…

You could always forgo the Beartooth Hwy if time is running out & just drive the Chief Joseph.

1+ hr from Roosevelt to northeast entrance; 2 hr Chief Joseph to Cody.

Traveling Late August. I could hike Mount Washburn the day before, but can't get there before afternoon and have read here in the forums that you're risking thunderstorms in the afternoon. Should I not worry and go for it?

I've only hiked Mt W. twice, once from each trail & once punching through scary snow bridges. So not only do I not have a good estimate on hiking time for that Mt., I also am not an "itinerary person" for suggesting where else to fit that hike in.

I'll alert Deb, who has hiked that Mt a bit & Pam to look at your itinerary.

I would do Washburn the day before even if the only time you can do it is in the afternoon. The risk of a thunderstorm is low but you do need to be aware of it and plan accordingly. Just make sure you have some type of rain gear (it can be a cheap rain poncho) in your day pack. If there is any lightening, hunker down in a safe area until the storm blows through. And of course, don't start hiking the trail in the first place if the sky looks threatening.

In my opinion, it would be very tight for you to get from Tower at 1pm to Cody in time for the rodeo at 7pm. It looks from your itinerary that you do not plan on going through Lamar Valley or anywhere in the Tower/Roosevelt area anytime before the day you leave. By doing Washburn the day before this would give you the entire day to explore this area along with going out the northeast entrance to the Rock Creek Vista Viewing Area and then back to Chief Joseph Scenic Highway to Cody for the rodeo. It would also give you some extra time to make some more stops along the Beartooth Highway. There are some really cool places you can stop if you are interested in and have some time for some short (30 minute) hikes.

If your weather is good, I would do your Mt Washburn hike on the day you do the Upper Loop. I would do Washburn in the AM, then make your loop counter-clockwise heading to Mammoth after your hike and finishing up with Norris.

I am guessing when you refer to the day before, you are referring to your Canyon area day? You could, on that day, do a quick drive thru Hayden first thing to see what is out, then head up and do Washburn, then come back and work the area from Canyon down to Mud Volcano.

I am glad you are doing the Ranger walk at OF. It is my favorite!

I love Ranger Programs. I try to do as many as I can when I visit a National Park unit; I've been to 40+ over the years. I will look into rearranging my trip a little bit. Is the sun angle in a good position for the canyon and falls in the afternoon, if I were to do Washburn before?

Is 4 hours reasonable to hike Mount Washburn from Dunraven Pass RT?

Denalicat, to simplify my itinerary for you since you're not a fan of them:

1 Arrive (Jackson Hole)

2 Yellowstone (Old Faithful Area)

3 Yellowstone (Mammoth Area)

4 Yellowstone (Canyon Area)

5 Beartooth to Cody Rodeo

6 Cody Museums to Jackson

7 Grand Teton National Park

8 Grand Teton National Park

9 Depart Wyoming

Oh, I'm just not that *good* with itineraries LOL. However, an itinerary is rather crucial as it would be hard to get lodging without one, eh!?

With your new Mt Washburn time rearranged, you can now drive Beartooth to Rk Ck Vista, back on the Beartooth to Chief Joseph to Cody, one of the most beautiful 2 drives anywhere.

You're going to have a magnificent trip!
