1st timers

Hi All,

We are staying at Oakhurst arriving on Wed 2 May, we will have 2 full days in Yosemite. an any one give us suggestions on walks to do, we wont have a lot of kit with us so some fairly easy ones would be great. We also plan to hire some bikes. Are there any must see places that we shouldnt miss?

Thanks

hi, we just got back from yosemite, we went for 2 nights there, it was our 1st time there also. Don't know if this would help but would like to share thoughts based on our experience. From oakhurst, will be 35 miles going up to the park enterance, (I think will take you about 45minutes to an hour if you drive 35 miles/hour) keep in mind that you will be driving through the mountain, there's only single lane on each way, and very windery road, hopefully there will be no bus in front of you, that will make the drive longer, but again the scenery will be marvelous.you will need to pay $20 for admission to park, that will allow you to go in and out for a week. From there if you turn right about 2 miles you will find mariposa grove home of giant sequoias it's an amazing thing to see. Left from the enterance about another 35 miles to yosemite valley. Not to far from the enterance you will hit wawona, the wawona hotel is the oldest hotel in the park , is one of yosemite's histotic landmarks.Wawona is also the last stop to get gas if you didn't do so in oakhurst. Right after the tunnel is the bridalveil fall very beautifull as also the upper and lower falls, i sugest do a little bit of hiking to the bottom of the fall. Try to have dining experience at the ahwahnee, we stayed there and had dinner there, was one of the best food i ever had a little bit pricey but you won't regret. There's also the food court at yosemite lodge at the falls that offer wide selection of affordable food. You can rent bikes there for $7.50/hour or $24.50/day.From the lodge you can also take the 2 hour valley floor tour for $ 22.00 / person. There's the ansel adams gallery museum at the village and the indian village. There will be a lot of things to do just at the valley for first timer, so i'm sure you'll have a lot of fun.

It depends on your fitness level..The drive is significant from Oakhurst to the valley, where you must go. I would do one day devoted to seeing the valley and a hike, and one day to perhaps drive to Glacier point for the Ansel Adams viewd and if motivated, a 2 hour hike to Sentinal Dome. If you are very fit, for the Valley and up hike, do Vernal and Nevada falls/Mist trail, an all day worth it hike, or you can stop at the bottom of Nevada Falls where Emerald pool is, and walk up a distance to tsee the bottom of Nevada Falls. Stop at visitor center and ask their opinions too.

It's touch and go for Glacier Point at this time of year, it's been a low snow year, but early May is still early for a Glacier Point opening.

www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tioga.htm

says there is no estimated opening date for Tioga Pass and Glacier Point roads, and that extremely icy conditions will prevent further progress until the weather clears.
