Snow Chains for car

Looking to drive to Yosemite (staying at Tenaya Lodge, Fish Camp) in early December 2008.

Will chains be required? If so, can they be hired on the way from San Francisco to Yosemite? Where & how much to hire?

When we went in winter a few years ago, 2 or the 4 days we were there, we were required to use chains outside of Tenaya up to Badger Pass. Driving down to the Valley they were not required. The bell hops at Tenaya came out and put on the chains for us and other guest.

Just a note: most rental cars will tell you that you cannot use chains on their cars.

You should have the chains in your car, though the necessity to use them could go either way. During our winters there are far fewer "chains required" days than not, we just don't know ahead of time which ones they will be.

Chains are available neary any entrance you will be using and there are usually chain guys at the put on spot who will provide this service for you for a small fee.

Have a great trip!
