Are there other roads that close (other than Tioga Road)?

I am planning trip for mid-May. Looking back over past years opening dates for Tioga Road, I am planning on it being closed (and if it's open, I'll just be happy!).

I'm thinking about leaving Yosemite and going toward Lake Tahoe. I see on maps that there are a number of roads (highways 108, 4, 88, 50) that all run in a northeasterly direction toward Lake Tahoe. Some maps I look at have little notations "closed in winter" on these roads.

Are these roads subject to the same closures that Tioga Road is OR are they at elevations that would assure that they are passable in May?

Just returned from Lake Tahoe area this afternoon, and Sonora Pass (Hwy 108) and Tioga Pass are both closed for the winter (they were still open last Tuesday). Hwy 50 will be open, and possibly the others, will be open mid-May. Tioga is a bit iffy for mid-May, as it generally opens the end of May.

wintersummer,

Highway 88 is often closed in winter...in mid-May it just depends on conditions. Highway 50 from Sacramento/Placerville to South Lake Tahoe is always open, unless it is white-out conditions, which I wouldn't expect in mid-May. Tioga Road is likely to be closed.

Here is the link to the California Dept of Transportation (DOT, aka CalTrans):

You can look for road conditions, and scenic highway information there.

Dear WinterSummer,

Follow the money, the roads that are open lead right into the casino towns...

80, 50 and 88/89 are plowed throughout the winter. Although a storm may close them for a day our two, they are generally open.

4, 108 & 120 are not plowed through the winter and remain closed until sometime in May/June.

May is wildflower season and you will have a lovely ride up highway 49 there are many quaint towns that were originally gold mining meccas. We like Columbia & Murphys which has become a Sierra Wine town.

Have a lovely holiday!

Hotel Charlotte - the money angle is an interesting way to figure out which roads will be the clearest!

Are you the owner of the Hotel Charlotte? We are considering places to stay and you're on the list.

I sometimes wonder if there was a great big casino on the other side of 120 in Lee Vining if there might not be a plow budget to keep Tioga Pass open year round.

Yes, my husband and I own the Hotel Charlotte. It would be great to have you stay with us, or if some other property is better suited, stop in for a cup of coffee and a "hello" on your way through town.

Have a fantastic trip, you have picked a great region to explore.

Hotel Charlotte - you've been so helpful in answering all these posts. With the holidays, my trip planning has been sidelined for a bit, but once we hit 2006, I'll be finishing up final details. (oh, hoping Delta doesn't go on strike OR completely out of business...I'm using the last of my Delta frequent flyer mileage to make this trip!)
