Yes, some people have chosen to stay in Bass Lake or Oakhurst. The down side is the location. Either one is about 1.5 hours to Yosemite Valley and requires using an entrance station (queuing up to enter & exit.) But for some folks, saving a little bit of money on lodging (and spending it on gasoline) or taking advantage of the amenities in those communities is the 'right' choice.

Have you read the Top Questions with lodging info? For three nights, I think a condo in Yosemite West might be a good option (make a few of your own meals?)

If Tioga Road is open and you want to visit Tuolumne Meadows, that's close to 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 hours from Oakhurst. Each way. Ugh.

Oakhurst is close to Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias and to Wawona.
