AnyHighlights along route leaving yosemite valley to S.F.?

We will be travelling the route from San Fran - Monteray -Yosemite and back to San Fran with 3 kids under 8. Are there any highlights along route 120 after leaing Yosemite Park and before San Fransisco or good places to stop to break up the long drive? Any recommendations appreciated.

IMO, the best thing is just to get there.

Will you have already seen Giant Sequoias somewhere in the Park? Do you just want a playground or city park where the kids can get their wiggles out?

In spring, I think Hwy 140 is much prettier than Hwy 120. The poppies & redbud trees are in bloom. But this may add 5 -15 minutes to your drive.

If you take 120, it's just a 20 minute detour up to Columbia State Historic Park:

This is an old mining town brought to life by the park service. It's best to visit in the summer when there are many activities scheduled to entertain the young ones.

Railtown in Jamestown is also close by and it starts its train rides on weekends in April:

Thank you. Yes we are just looking for a safe place other than the typical fast food gas station stops to stretch our legs and run around a bit and if lucky see an attraction.

Your three kids may enjoy a tour of the Jelly Belly factory? It is not the most direct route, but it would make a nice stop.

There's a lovely park at Knight's Ferry, just off of 120 before you reach Oakdale. If you pick up some provisions at the grocery store in Groveland, then you can have a wonderful picnic there. Great spot for letting the kids get a run around.

I'd also second the recommendation for Columbia State Historic Park. We used to take our kids there when they were little. The only thing is that it's a good time commitment: they can go panning for gold, go on a stagecoach ride, go on a horseback ride. It's great fun but plan on a few hours at least. Lots of great places to eat there, including a spot where they serve home made sassparilla soda.
