Driving to yosemite from San Francisco

We are planning a late September trip to San Francisco. My husband is very uncomfortable with mountain driving due to a fear of heights and unfamiliarity of driving on high mountain roads. How bad are the roads into Yosemite from San Francisco. Should we attempt it or are we better off taking a bus tour?

I don't think the roads are bad. The gentlest route is Hwy 140 along the Merced River. There is one section kind of near Midpines (I think Yosemite DE marmot can describe it well) that is higher, but mostly it's just fine.

However, if you'd be happier on a bus tour (please stay at least one night in Yosemite!), then do so. The tour options from SF are on the San Francisco forum page, Top Questions on the right side of the page.

No "high mountains" along the 140 - I think he'll do just fine. Once there, he can decide whether he wants to go higher (most places very gentle, although I suppose going up to Glacier Point via Tunnel View might upset a person very sensitive to heights).

The other option is to drive as far as the town of Mariposa, leave your car in the Park-and-Ride there, and ride a YARTS bus from there up into the park. See http://yarts.com for the Highway 140 Route.

Within the park you can use the free shuttle to get around the floor of Yosemite Valley, or take paid guided tours on buses or trams, around the valley and/or to other areas of the park

No problem..although going over Tioga Pass might/should worry him a tad.
