Driving LA to Yosemite National Park

We're visiting in Mid April 2014 (2 adults & 2 childrent), first stop Aneheim for Disneyland then driving up to Yosemite National Park for 3/4 days. Where is a good place to stay overnight on the way to Yosemite OR is the drive possible to do in a day?? We're not sure if it's best to break up the drive, or go right through and spend an extra night at Yosemite - any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

You could stay the first night in Oakhurst or Fish Camp. Oakhurst is about 290 miles from Anaheim, about 5 driving hours plus time spent at stops along the way. You could finish that day with a trip to the MariposvGrove inside the park, or the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad outside the park. Stay only one night there; the following nights in Yosemite Valley.

If you make an early start...to get through the LA area traffic ..you could do it. I live on the other side of Yosemite and regularly drive to San Diego in a day.

I like the idea of stopping in Oakhurst or Fish Camp, if you don't want to go all the way to Yosemite Valley. The next morning, go to Mariposa Grove when you're rested & ready (30 min from Oakhurst.) The 2 mile road to the grove parking lot might still be closed for the season, but you could certainly walk on the road.

Then it's another 55-60 minutes to Yosemite Valley. Be sure to stop at Tunnel View (just after you exit the Wawona Tunnel) for a great view and then again at Bridalveil Fall.

From Tunnel View you'll be able to see lots of seasonal waterfalls that only have water in April & May. It's such a terrific view that you may want to return to this spot over & over.

If you do choose to drive all the way to Yosemite Valley in one day, you'll wake up surrounded by granite cliffs and waterfalls ... also lovely. But you'll still probably want to backtrack an hour to Mariposa Grove at some point.

Lodging descriptions, trip reports, activities with children and such are in the Top Questions. Itinerary ideas are in the Trip Ideas. Both are on the right side of the page, full TripAdvisor website (not the app.)
