san francisco to las vegas itinery

Hi We are going to San francisco in September and we are planning to drive across to Las Vegas via Yosemite and Death Valley, but we are having trouble deciding which way to go.

We have 6 nights/7 days to get there leaving San francisco on September 29th and ending in Vegas on 5th October.

We want to see all the main sites in Yosemite, including the sequioas at mariposa and the sites on the eastern side of yosemite too, especially the ghost town of Brodie, Would a good itinery be to drive to Oakhurst (is that a long drive from San francisco?) a night around there. A couple of nights in the west side of yosemite then maybe a night somewhere on the east side (any suggestions?) then a night in death valley? or maybe lone pine?

We have checked out accommodation in yosemite valley but it is working out quite expensive (we would prefer to stay in a hotel rather than tents!). Can you suggest places close to Yosemite valley that we could use as a base and maybe get a shuttle or drive into yosemite to see the sites?

We have been looking at the information on this site but there is so much information we're not sure where to start! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi

The information you need is collected in the Top Questions on the right.

Staying in or very near Yosemite VAlley would be ideal. Check the drive times to Yosemite Valley in the lodging article in the Top Q.

Then follow some of the ideas in the articles linked to "What is a good route to travel to Yosemite from Las Vegas?" If you have a night to stay in Lee Vining or June Lake, that would be great.

From SF, it's a fairly easy drive to Oakhurst. You could drop your luggage and go on to Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. Then go back to Oakhurst to sleep.

On Day 2, drive up to Glacier Point first thing. Maybe hike/walk Sentinel Dome. On to Yosemite Valley. Stay here (get a cancellation at the Lodge?)

Day 3 morning in Yosemite Valley? Just head up to Tuolumne Meadows? Stay Lee Vining / June Lake

Day 4 Back into Yosemite for more time in Tuolumne Meadows?, Bodie State Park, Mono Lake. Back to same lodging? Move down the road?

Day 5 More time in the eastern Sierra? Into Death Valley NP. Spend the night (stars!)

Day 6 DVNP and on to Las Vegas

Congratulations on allowing yourself ample time to explore this beautiful area of the world.

The tented cabins in White Wolf and Tuolumne are quite nice and it is a lovely experience to be able to stay in those beautiful places. They have beds with linens and blankets and a table w chairs and a wood stove. There is also a dining room on the premises. I would encourage you to break down and try Tuolumne Meadows Lodge (it's the tented camp) for one night on you way to the eastern side. Then you can enjoy those day hikes so much more. Then down Tioga Pass to Lee Vining, north to Bodie Ghost Town State Park, Mono Lake, and stay in Mammoth Lakes. Then down the eastern sierra to Lone Pine. Then on to Death Valley for the night.

So something like:

Day 1 SF to Yosemite: Stay Yosemite valley

Day 2 Yosemite: Stay Yosemite valley

Day 3 Yosemite: Stay Yosemite valley

Day 4 Yosemite: Stay Tuolumne Meadows

Day 5 Lee vining and north: Stay Mammoth Lakes

Day 6 Eastern Sierra: Stay Lone Pine

Day 7 Death Valley: Stay Death Valley

Day 8 Drive to Las Vegas from Death Valley

In Oakhurst - Best Western has nice murals on the walls of the room. Close enough to drive up to Wawona section and Mariposa section of Yosemite National Park and return to the hotel.

In Yosemite, I would recommend splurging for at least a night in the Valley.

On the East side drive slowly through Toulumne Meadow region, exit via Tioga Pass, stop by Mono Lake, and the settle for a night at Gull Lake Lodge (you can even cook your own meal here if you want as has kitchens and barbecue area by the rooms)

On your way to Lone Pine, stop by Mammoth Lakes and Convict Lake to see the areas

and stay in Lone Pine at Best Western

Its good to stay as far south as Lone Pine (instead of Bishop) to give you an early start to getting to Death Valley.

The above recommendations by both are also excellent...just wanted to give you a couple of names of places to possibly check out and stay outside of Yosemite Park.
