San Fransisco to Vegas road trip

Hi we are travelling from San Francisco to Las Vegas via Yosimite national park and Death Vally, We have four days to do this trip at the end of may, please could anybody help with an itinerary? Where is it best to spend the 1st night and is it worth spending more then one night in a particular hotel/area? Or spread each night across the park/death Vally? (this maybe tiring) Any recommendation greatly appreciate as I just don't know where to start!

There's so much to see!!!

Many thanks Corrina

Hi Corrina

So you have 4 days / 3 nights to drive from San Francisco to Las Vegas at the end of May and you don't yet have any lodging reservations. Is that right?

There isn't one "best" itinerary for all travelers as folks have different interests. With 3 nights, you could do something like this

Day 1: enter at the South Entrance, visit Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. Stay in or near Yosemite.

Day 2: visit Yosemite Valley and Glacier Point. Stay in or near Yosemite Valley.

Day 3: drive through Tuolumne Meadows, stopping often. Exit via the Tioga Pass entrance and head down Hwy 395. Stay in Bishop or Lone Pine.

Day 4: Enter DVNP at the Panamint Entrance and travel through the Park, detouring to Badwater and maybe to Dante's View.

There are other options for timing, depending on your interests.

These articles may help you in your research.

======

The Top Questions on the right has lodging suggestions. You absolutely MUST have reservations for this portion of your trip as Yosemite is so popular, especially in spring.

You'll have to figure out which areas of Yosemite, of the eastern Sierra, and of Death Valley appeal to you the most. Perhaps you have toddlers and need to have shorter drives. Or perhaps you are fitness buffs and want to have one tremendous long hike in Yosemite NP. Or maybe you're a romantic couple looking forward to spending time stargazing in quiet locations. Lots of great options!

(Be sure to check the DVNP forum page for ideas about that National Park.)

If you are not from the US, be advised that May 24-26 is a very big holiday weekend in the US and many places are already booked.

Thank you, we have 4 nights but a little worried we may have left it too late to book hotels now 😔

Four nights beginning on which date? What are some of the things you want to do or see in Yosemite?

I would drive from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe. You will be able to find rooms there if you book now.

http://visitinglaketahoe.com/

Perhaps a lake cruise which for holiday should also book ahead

http://www.zephyrcove.com/msdixie.aspx

(I checked expedia and there were options this morning - and generally you can find room here.

Travel is about four hours and you might consider stopping by Old Town Sacramento on the drive up.

2) Then drive south to June Lake area (note: Stay here two nights - on the full day there you can either see the sights in the area or its close enough to drive into Yosemite park, explore the park and return). There are various lodging ideas on the site, if this fails also check Mammoth Lakes.

You can explore such things as the mountain lakes here, Bodie, Mono Lake, etc.

Then drive south to Lone Pine and stay a night, perhaps at the Best Western...Next morning see Las Vegas and after you exit the park, its about a two hour drive into Las Vegas.

…bestwestern.com/bestwestern/…

If you book this week, you should still be able to find room - and see a lot. In the national parks, its pretty much as you fear - booked ahead of time.

On the drive to Lone Pine, you might consider seeing the Ancient Bristle Cone Pine area close to the town of Big Pine.

Okay. Since you're posting on the Yosemite NP forum page, I'll assume that you want to spend most of your time in Yosemite. (My assumption may be incorrect, but it's my best guess.) You did say that you want to drive via Yosemite and Death Valley.

Lodging Ideas tripadvisor.com/Travel-g61000-c59487

-------

Sunday May 25:

Drive to the South Entrance. Stop in Oakhurst for lunch. Continue into the Park and drive down to Wawona. Try to find a place to park. Ride the shuttle up to Mariposa Grove. Walk or tour. Back to Wawona.

Mariposa Grove tripadvisor.com/Travel-g61000-d592681

Things to do in Wawona tripadvisor.com/Travel-g61000-c196037

Drive to reserved lodging at the Wawona Hotel, in Yosemite West, in Fish Camp, or in Oakhurst.

--------

Monday May 26, Memorial Day:

Drive to Glacier Point in the morning. Depending on where you're staying, this could be 35 minutes or 90 minutes. Walk, take photos. Maybe walk up Sentinel Dome. Maybe do the Taft Point - Pohono Trail - Sentinel Dome loop (hopefully more snow will have melted by then!) Eat your picnic lunch?

Sentinel Dome tripadvisor.com/Travel-g61000-d532061

Drive down to Yosemite Valley, stopping at Tunnel View and maybe Bridalveil Fall.

What To See As You Drive Into Yosemite Valley tripadvisor.com/Travel-g61000-c2636

Go to Curry Village where you have reserved a tent cabin for two nights (or if you're staying in Yosemite West for 3 nights, just go to Visitor Parking.)

Valley tourism ... walk, shuttle, bike, float / raft Merced River, Mirror Lake, Valley Floor Loop Trail, fee Valley Floor tour (save for 10 am on Tuesday), hike, photograph, attend ranger presentation, see waterfalls

Stay in the Valley

Tuesday May 27

More time in Yosemite Valley. Maybe stay here another night

--------

Wed May 28

Begin drive toward Las Vegas. Savor the Tioga Road drive (Olmsted Point, Tenaya Lake, Tuolumne Meadows) tho' there may still be some snow. Exit Tioga Pass.

Time for Mono Lake?

South on Hwy 395.

Stay Bishop or Lone Pine.

Drive between LV and Yosemite Valley: tripadvisor.com/Travel-g28926-c182361

-------

Thurs May 29

Drive through Death Valley NP seeing Mosaic Canyon, Sand Dunes, pup fish?, Badwater, Artist Drive, Furnace Creek, Zabriskie Point, Twenty Mule Team Canyon, Dante's View, and out.

=============

There are definitely variations on this. Perhaps you want to visit Hetch Hetchy and smaller Tuolumne Grove. Perhaps you want to include Bodie State Historic Park (ghost town) for a 3 hr detour and decide to exit Yosemite Valley after lunch on Tuesday, see Tuolumne Meadows on Tuesday afternoon, and stay in Lee Vining or June Lakes that night. Perhaps you want to see Lake Tahoe on Sunday and then use Tioga Pass entrance for both your entry & exit to Yosemite NP. Perhaps you want to visit the California Gold Rush country along Hwy 49 on Sunday.

Read some more, look at photos, do some research using a variety of resources, and then let us know more about what really appeals to you!

Thank you so much for your replies, they have been very helpful.

We wanted to see as much as possible so didn't really have a preference what we saw or where we stayed?. Obviously we are limited now as we have left it so late to book! We thought we could just drive into the park and stay where we fancied along the way (didn't know how busy it is that weekend!) We have booked 2 nights in Mariposa to start then our last night we have booked in Lone pine so we can have a early start to drive across Death Vally. We are hoping to get somewhere booked in-between the two but not had chance with work eek!!
