Driving from Yosemite Park to Death Valley

We're planning our trip for July 2015 but am now unsure about the Yosemite part so could do with some advice. We're driving up from San Fran to stay 2 nights in Yosemite Park. We are looking at 2 places to stay before heading on to Bishop to stay one night at the Creekside Inn in Bishop then one night at Furnace Creek lodge Death valley before heading on to Vegas.

My question is about the 2 places we have looked at in Yosemite. The first is Yosemite Lodge at the Falls and the second is Tenaya Lodge. I liked the look of the Lodge at the Falls but after having a look at Tenaya lodge that would be my preference. The drive from San Fran to Vegas is set in stone with stops in Bishop and Death Valley but which would be the better hotel to stay in Yosemite? I'd budgeted on about a 2 1/4 hour drive from the lodge at the falls to Bishop, does anyone know what the driving time from Tenaya Lodge to Bishop going via Tiago pass is?

Sorry I don't know the driving time (I could look an estimate on Google Maps but so could you :) ), however it's probably worth bearing in mind that there are several great places to stop along the Tioga Pass road, such as Olmsted Point, Tenaya Lake and Tuolumne Meadows, so it would worth allowing some time for those if they appeal to you.

Thanks for the reply and it was helpful and yes they all appeal, really looking to see and do as much as possible as this really will be a once in a lifetime trip so looking to fit in as much as we can so looking for the better of the two hotels.

We stayed in a Curry Village tent in 2010 and will be staying in a Curry Village Cabin next month. The tent isn't everyone's cup of tea, basic facilities but you're right in the heart of Yosemite valley with everything close by - great hikes, Glacier Point and Tunnel View not too far away. Really looking forward to going back it's a really special place.

Chose location over hotel comfort. You can always take a trip and find a "better hotel".

You cannot find Yosemite Valley anywhere else.

Count on 3.5 to 4 hours depending on traffic between Fish Camp and Bishop without stops.

I've done the trip from the South (41) all the way to Bishop. We took the whole day because there was lots to do along Tioga Road in Yosemite.

On the drive, we skipped Wawona, Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley because we had already done that. But this is what we did in the 10 hours:

- Tunnel View (again)

- Olmsted Point and walked to the overlook for views of Half Dome

- Lake Tenaya and dipped toes into the cold water. Picnic lunch

- TM visitor center

- Hiked up Pothole Dome

- Tioga Lake Overlook

- Mono Lake Visitor Center

- Mobil Mart for early dinner

- Bishop

If you stay in Yosemite Valley, you save about 1+ hour on the drive to Bishop.

If plush towels, fancy soaps and high thread count sheets are important to you pick Tenaya Lodge. If waking up in one of the most beautiful locations in the world is important, pick the Lodge at the Falls. You will waste valuable Yosemite time driving to see what you want to see if you decide to stay at the Tenaya Lodge vs. the Lodge at the Falls. Location is a very valuable asset.

If both appeal to you, stay in Tenaya Lodge for the first night and Yosemite Lodge at the Falls for the second night.

Day 1: 4 hr drive from San Francisco (abbreviated SF) to Fish Camp. Perhaps stop for lunch in Oakhurst on the way. Drop luggage, maybe check in. Drive to the South Entrance. Visit Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.

Day 2: 1 hr drive to Glacier Point. Visit. 1 hr drive to Yosemite Valley w/ stops at Tunnel View & Bridalveil Falls. Check in or drop luggage or just jump on a shuttle. Yosemite Valley tourism.

Day 3: Tuolumne Meadows. Eastern Sierra. Stay Bishop. (Might be better to stay further north so you can see some of the northerly 'attractions' like Mono Lake and/or Bodie State Historic Park. Details: tripadvisor.com/Travel-g28926-c182361
