Itinerary Help

Ok, so the San Francisco element of our 2 week early September road trip is sorted, currently working on the Tahoe part and now for Yosemite, we will be leaving North Lake Tahoe on route to Evergreen Lodge where we will be staying for 3 nights and hope to take in both Bodie and a stop at Mono Lake on the way to the Tioga Road entrance.

We have 2 full days in the park and our thought was to devote 1 day to the valley and another to Tuolumne Meadows, but we are struggling to put an itinerary together for either day with so much to see !

We are not massive hikers but having looked through numerous trip reports quite like the sound of the Taft Point,Sentinal Dome, Pohono loop, would also like to take in maybe The Mist Trail, Yosemite Falls Tenaya Lake, food/drinks at The Ahwahnee etc, also best place to catch a sunset.

Thought maybe take in Glacier Point (or should we do this the day we are in the valley ?) on the way out the South entrance together with Mariposa Grove on our way to Paso Robles.

So much to try and squeeze in and so little time, any help or ideas of how to best spend our time would be great.

Hi

The Taft Point - Pohono Trail - Sentinel Dome loop is on the Glacier Point road. So if you're making that hike, you are pretty much deciding to go to Glacier Point as well.

Yosemite Falls is fed by a seasonal stream, and September is not the season. It will be completely dry.

I haven't seen what you plan to do at Tuolumne Meadows except Tenaya Lake. You may want to define what you want to do at Tuolumne Meadows first to make planning easier.

When you come in from Lake Tahoe, Bodie, Mono Lake, via Tiogo Road, you will pass through Tuolumne Meadows. Depending on what time you arrive, you may be able to visit a couple of points. e.g. Tenaya Lake, and Olmsted Point (must stop). You may or may not have time to hike some of the places (e.g. Lembert Dome, Pothole Dome, Lyell Canyon, Soda Spring).

If you have only 2 days, it may be hard to hit all the activities in 3 places - Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite Valley, and Glacier Point. Evergreen Lodge - you need to drive >1 hour to Tuolumne Meadows, about 1 hour to Yosemite Valley, maybe 1.5 hour to Glacier Point.

You can probably spend 1 day in Yosemite Valley. And that would be for:

- Yosemite Falls

- Bridalveil Falls

- The Mist Trail (Vernal Fall)

- food/drinks at The Ahwahnee

Another day at Glacier Point, that would be for:

- Tunnel View

- Taft Point,Sentinal Dome, Pohono loop

- Stay at Glacier Point for sunset

Neither Mono Lake nor Bodie State Park are in Yosemite National Park. They are east of the park and east of Tioga Pass, so you would drive through Tuolumne Meadows to Tioga Pass then to Mono Lake and Bodie.

However, with the limited time you have, and the fact that you are departing the park to the west, not the east, you don't have time to drive over Tioga Pass, and visit Mono Lake and Bodie.

I'm not sure you actually have time to drive to Tenaya Lake, either.

Probably a 3 hour drive from Bodie back to Evergreen Lodge.

They said they will start from Lake Tahoe. I assume they want to take highway 395 and come to Yosemite from the east, thus will pass by Mono Lake, and make a detour to Bodie en route. Though doing this route, you won't pass by Tuolumne Meadows until late in the day, which may not allow time for any hiking in Tuolumne Meadows itself until another day. Passing by Tenaya Lake and Olmsted Point for some sight-seeing should be okay.

Hi all

Following further research and your recommendations we intend stopping at Bodie, Mono Lake and maybe quick stops at Tenaya Lake & Olmsted Point on the way to our stay at Evergreen Lodge, we originally booked three nights here but made an error with our dates which we have tried to change(push forward by a day)but unfortunately they are full for what would be our third night so we now only have two nights here and are looking for accommodation for 1 night before we leave for Paso Robles, we intended spending our 1st full day hopefully car free in the valley with the 2nd day around Glacier Point and have managed to find availability at both Tenaya Lodge and Yosemite View, any views on which would be best or any others we should consider

Thanks for your help

Is this your current plan?

Day 1 - drive from Tahoe, enjoy attractions along Tioga Road, stay Evergreen Lodge

Day 2 - Yosemite Valley, stay Evergreen Lodge

Day 3 - Glacier Point, stay El Portal or Fish Camp

If so, I "vote" for Fish Camp or even Oakhurst. This will allow you time in the afternoon of Day 3 to visit Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. Hwy 41 is the easiest way to get to Paso Robles on Day 4.

Hi ,

That is exactly our plan, we were hoping to spend 3 nights at Evergreen and visit Mariposa on the way out but wil now look at both options, any preference (cost wise they are fairly similar) thanks for your input.

Not Mariposa! You want Mariposa Grove.

Mariposa Grove to El Portal (Yosemite View Lodge) is about 1 1/4 hrs. On to Paso Robles on Day 4 is 4 hrs.

Mariposa Grove to Fish Camp (Tenaya Lodge) is about 10 minutes. On to Paso Robles on Day 4 is 3 hrs.

If you want to "make" more miles toward Paso Robles, you could stay in Oakhurst or in Fresno. If you choose Fresno, ask on that forum. Some locations are great and some are sketchy.
