Important: Tubing

All of the riverside bars in Vang Vieng for Tubing have now officially been shut. There is NO MORE tubing! Supposedly this is long term rather than just the police cracking down for the day.

I went down to the river today and can confirm that NONE of the bars were open at all. People were going down in tuk tuks and then having to pay the same driver to go straight back because it is all closed.

Must be after the PM visit earlier in the week - the provincial authorities got a bit of a scalding for letting it all slide the last decade apparently.

Go and have a swim and cold beer at the Tham Phu Kham cave area - better than tubing anyway IMO.

As long as they don't close the Xong River or take away the scenery I'd return in a heartbeat.

nickingtons:

The photo of the bridge from the Vientiane Times. That bridge was washed away when we stayed there.

1: Rebuild

2: Old photo

Then they go on to say......

" but will be allowed to reopen once safety measures are employed to ensure the safe enjoyment of customers'

We plan on returning soon, bars or no bars!

Indeed the bridge isn't there, because it's the wet season. You get across the river by boat at the tubing start point. Yesterday the police stopped these boats. Today, the boats weren't running, nor were any of the first bars. (People who had hired tubes and then decided to go down the river mentioned that 2 bars halfway down were open).

All the bars on the island such as bucket bar don't seem to be playing music at all tonight. There's an extremely weird atmosphere here at the moment.

Edit: to clarify- you can still tube down the river, just not as it's been known. No more bars/swings etc...

That is excellent news. Lets hope it lasts and is not just a temporary measure.
