Cycling around vang ving

Hi, we are visiting vang ving next year. We are not to sure how many nights for but we are keen cyclists. Is it quite easy and safe to just hop on a push bike and explore the surrounding area? Also how many nights would people recommend as we are in Laos for 9 days and fly into Lpq.

Thank you.

There is some great dirt-road cycling around the mountains near Vang Vieng. Three days should be enough to have a good explore and see the caves & waterfalls. Make sure you look around at the mountain bikes on offer as quality varies a lot.

Have a look here for cycle tracks

I agree with Bluecramp! I was glad I had opted for a good mountainbike with many gears instead of the simple one gear bikes they tried to make me take. And I was also glad I had asked them to fill the tyres better. Some of the dirt roads are pretty soft and/or steep. Amazing scenery.

In town you can easily get around on a simple bike.

In Luang Prabang (and various other towns) you can also rent simple bikes to get around town, again make sure you check the quality and the tyres.

I would recommend 2 days and 2 nights in Vang Vieng. I have been there twice, using both mountainbikes and regular bike (aka "pushbikes"). You can rent either at any number of shops in the downtown area. Regular bikes are 15,000 kip per day(about US$2), and mountain bikes are 30,000. Some of the shops give you a little printed out map. You can easily do the dirt/gravel roads on a regular bike and explore the caves this way. Test ride the bike before you commit, I had one mountain bike that had so much oil in the shocks that it soiled and ruined a pair of my hiking shorts! Others have wobbly tires or bad brakes. Bring plenty of water and a hat/sunscreen because it is a long ways under the sun wiht no shade (until you reach the caves!).

Here's the link, click on the Vang Vieng section to see the various maps.

Many cycle rental shops will give you a photcopied map, that has been good enough for me on both my visits there...
