All of the major hotels have restaurants, some with European chefs, with Asian and Western menus and open to guests from the other hotels. If you fancy prime Australian Beef at $35 or fancy pasta at $25 washed down with French wine at $37 then a few of the hotels can match your needs but you can still eat in modestly at most of the hotels with sandwiches/salads at $6, mains at $10 and beer at $4.
However, virtually everyone eats out at the local restaurants on the road behind the hotels or at the cluster of beach restaurants near Thande Beach Hotel and Pleasant View Resort to the South.
Lunch here for two comprising grilled fish, salad and fries with a couple of cocktails and beer and water will cost you $12. In the evening you can splash out and a dish of grilled prawns, a stir fry or sweet & sour dish, a fillet of red snapper or barracuda with all the sides and a bottle of Myanmar rose ($15) will cost less than $30 for two. And most of the restaurants will serve you a complimentary dessert of fresh fruit or a baked banana in Mandalay rum, to finish.
They prefer kyats for payment but will accept $'s at maybe a 50kyat difference from the official rates.
The private restaurants are run by locals from the two adjacent fishing villages and you will be offered a selection from the mornings catch-and if you need something they haven't got, say lobster or tiger prawns, they will get them for you for that evening.
Their menus are not just restricted to grilled fish-you can have it cooked anyway you want and most menus include Thai and Chinese options and chicken and pork. All appear to have good hygiene standards (for a beach) with many advertising "barmans pure ice"
Cocktails are $3, beer $2 (some have draught) and wine $15. If you fancy Shan State white or rose do order it early so it can be pre chilled.
Most local restaurants sell local spirits and wine, the latter only by the bottle and one beach Restaurant, Angel, even has imported spirits.
