Whilst most visitors come for the sun & the sea with their days geared to lying on their sun lounger reading a book, walking the beach, a swim in the warm sea or the pool and planning where to have lunch or dinner there are other activities for those who want to get out and about.
CYCLING-most hotels hire out bikes and the back road is now surfaced so you can ride to the local villages or along the firm sand on the beach.
SNORKELING & FISHING- morning trips to the local island costs $25 for a boat carrying up to 6. Stop to fish on the way, then two or three snorkelling opportunities then stop on an island beach to bbq your catch. Decent coral and fish but not up to Maldives standards but good fun. The boat comes with fins masks and snorkel and cool box with water.
MASSAGE-A few of the beach restaurants also have massage beds.
ELEPHANT CAMP TRIP-Advertised at a couple of restaurants. A forty minute drive to a working elephant logging camp. Quite pricy at 35000 kyat.
THANDWE TOWN- a traditional Rakhine town about 40 minutes by bus or taxi. Interesting local market, a Suni Mosque and a mat weaving factory.
LOCAL FISHING VILLAGES- of Linthar (North of the main beach) and Gyeiktaw (Jade Taw)to the South
SCUBA DIVING & RIVER TRIPS-offered by Ngapali Water Sports Centre on their "Ngapali Princess" http://www.ngapaliwatersport.com/
SCHOOL VISIT-pop in any day except Monday or holidays between 7 and 9 in the mornings or between 4 and 7 in the afternoon to "Mamma Sue's" Charity English school in Linthar village ,look out for the Yoma Cherry Lodge sign. The school is totally dependent on contributions, has over 250 local kids enrolled for English classes and also looks after their health welfare. http://www.myanmar-aid.org/home.htm
GOLF COURSE- there is a 9 hole golf course near Linthar village. Club hire and transport/caddies is about $30 from your hotel.
STUPAS- And if you haven't had your fill of stupas by now there are 3 golden stupas around Thandwe town and a white one ,with great views, near Lontha town to the South.
Or of course you could just lie on your lounger in the sun with a Mandalay beer in one hand and your Kindle in the other.......
