Yala or Udawalawe - which one's best?

Hi there - read up on both Yala and Udawalawe national parks. Both seem to have mixed reviews. If you were choosing for a 2 night/3day stay at end of July, which one would you go for?

Thanks.

Definitely Yala. The park has a much wider range of wildlife than Udawalawe which is mainly known for its elephants. Yala has a more open aspect and it's easier and more likely that you will see many more animals and birds overall, including a reasonable chance of spotting leopards.

Not only that, the area surrounding Yala is really fascinating and interesting. Whilst there, you can also visit the nearby pilgrimage town of Kataragama to witness the evening pooja in the Sacred Precinct area, and Tissa town is also very interesting with its massive stupas and big lake.

You're welcome! That south east corner of Sri Lanka is one of my favourite areas. And at the end of July, the east is getting its best weather of the year too, which is another reason to head there because you can almost guarantee hot, dry sunny weather in that region.

Have fun!

If you are not going to Cultural Triangle (Minneriya National Park) I would definitely recommend that you save one safari for Udawalawe National Park.

Yes, it's mainly elephants, but there big herds of them in Udawalawe.

And also UW has the most magnificent natural backdrop of the three main parks mentioned: a huge lake ('tank') and then 30 km to the north the backdrop of the mountain massive rising 1 km very steeply. Impressive for pics with jumbos.

All the best,

all the animals that you see in Udawalawe, is possible to see them in Yala... but not the other way around,

because Yala is the only place where you can see leopards.

but i do have to agree with Erik on the landscape.

so i guess it depends on how bad you want to see leopards :)
