Stop the misbehavior and violations at Yala

With the reopening of Yala National Park this month, this is a reminder to please abide by the park rules. Visitors and drivers seem to forget that this is a WILD ANIMAL Park, and not a zoo.

Prior to the park closing in September, there were continuous issues with the over-friendly elephant that approached the vehicles. Several of the drivers started feeding this elephant, and visitors followed suit. Then it got to the point that the elephant started getting bolder and started rummaging through the contents of the jeep with his trunk. Then, at one point, an automatic weapon was fired into the air to scare the elephant away.

If this continues, this elephant will hurt somebody, and eventualy be shot...and I am sure that none of us want that.

Please DO NOT LET YOUR DRIVER STOP NEAR THE ELEPHANT so that you can feed him or take close up pics. Not only is this a violation which will get you arrested, it could get YOU seriously hurt or killed, and the elephant soon after. DO NOT GET OUT ON FOOT....this is getting more and more common when leopards and elephants are spotted. These animals can easily outrun a human being, and reach you within seconds.

Take a look at the videos below and you will spot the many violations....and when the drivers can easily drive away, they choose to stay and put everybody in harms way.

Ditto for the Minneriya/Habarana/ Giritale National Parks, Robbie.

Is there a recommended distance to be kept between jeeps and elephants?

On two occasions now our jeep has been well back from other jeeps. On the first occasion we were leaving when one elephant passed those jeeps and put up a charge at us. On the second occasion recently a jeep some distance in front of us had an elephant charge at them. We had turned around to go to see another group in a different area so I wondered if that had disturbed it. There were only six jeeps there at that time as it was around 2pm on a cloudy day after rain.

I was told that the elephant who had charged at us three years ago still does that and now has a baby. I think she has been given the name Kandula - after the famous war elephant of ancient chronicles, maybe.

Hi Archi,

I haven't been to Minneriya for over a year, but I do remember that there was an elephant or two that would charge the vehicles. It could well be (prior) bad memories where vehicles have blocked the elephants' path. Even now, this constantly happens in Yala, and these videos appear on Youtube as well. However, this seems to be less in Minneriya.

As for a safe distance....the rule of thumb is not to get in the elephants path and not agitate them.

Regards,

Robbie

If anyone wants to feed or get close ups, why not visit the Dehiwala Zoo or Pinnawela!? Some temples also have elephants that you could feed.

Temple of tooth always seems to have elephants that can fed by people..So if you want to feed elephants go to a place like that.
