Shangri la - Questions

We are booked into the Shangri La for 6 nights - leaving in 2 weeks!!

I'm travelling on my own with my two children (11 & 7). We fly in at 4.50pm on Thursday 19th with Air Pacific.

I have a few questions if you wouldn't mind answering - less stress the better :)

1. Snacks/drinks for the kids & alcohol for myself - where is the best place to purchase. Are the wine bottles screw top or cork?

2. Hairbraiding - my daughter would love to get her hair braided - any recommendations including costs?

3. Must do tours? Would love to visit a local school.

4. How much cash should I take? Our package includes all meals and FJD$250 credit.

5. What should I use the FJD$250 credit for? Drinks? Tours? Spa?

Can't think of anything else atm, but if there is anything please let me know.

Hi Bronwyn,

1. Pack their fav's in your suitcase. Declare your food on the way in, you wont have any trouble if its all sealed. We usually take chips, biscuits etc.

We also purchase our duty free on arrival, and that is usually spirits, so I cant help with the wine question.

2. Last year my daughter and her friend had their hair done inside the resort and it was $1fj per braid, I have read its cheaper just outside the resort, but they were happy to have it done inside (they paid).

3. See Mun (probably not the correct spelling) he works for the resort, you wont miss him. They do a tour that includes a school visit as well as Natadola beach, and its a great day.

4. You can book eveything up to your room and pay by credit card. The exchange rate has been great. You can keep a check on your purchases via your tv in your room, and I suggest you do this as mistakes do happen. You can also change money and travelers chqs in the resort, but you wont get as good rate. You can also buy money here at the post office ect.

5. Im sure you will not have any trouble using the credit, maybe treat yourself to something special.

We have been to the Shagri la 3 times and always had a great time.

Have a great trip, feel free to ask any other questions

Hi Brisvegas08

the Fiji school term end on Friday the 28th of November and the students are off school until Monday the 25th of January 2010.

So you say you are going in 2 weeks you might just get there in time visit a school.

You are staying at the Shangri La so I suggest if you want a school tour you get a tour with Danny at Danny's Fiji Village Homestay.

His place is about 30mins car ride from the Shangri La. Danny can pick up you. He came and picked us up from our resort.

His homestay is right on the beach

for the school tour I suggest you arrive at around 10am and help prepared a traditional Fijian lovo. Your two children will love this. See the pictures on his website of past guest and their children preparing the lovo. Once the lovo has been prepared in in the ground you can have a fully escorted tour of the local school. Meet the head master and then see the students sing traditional Fijian songs. It is a great experience for Australian and New Zealand children to see how the Fijian children go to school...it is very different.

Once the school tour has finished back to the village for a tour of the village and then back to unearth the lovo for a beautiful lunch.

This is a traditional Fijian village so you and your children will experience traditional fijian cultural and get to see a Fijian school.

Also have a look on Dannys website the waterfall tour is awesome. A fully escorted tour up into the Fijian highlands to Danny's wifes home village and then onto swim in the waterfall. see the pictures on Danny's website. Danny also has a range of fully escorted tours all over the coral coast.

I went there with my husband and our 3 children 12, 9 and 3 and it was FANTASTIC...highly recommended.

Hope this helps.

With regard to the wine - both screwtop & cork are available - purchasing at Duty Free or at local bottle shops will be much cheaper than at the resort.

Snacks - bring favourites with you (declare at customs), tyou can buy aussie chocolates etc at reasonable prices.

Just take a small amount of cash for any purchases outside the hotel, any leftovers spend at dutyfree on your way out.

I am travelling to Shangri La with my husband on June 2. We would be pleased if you could send us by email some copies of menus and drink prices. It would help to know how much cash to take as we only get breakfast on our deal.
