Stay at Mount Cook or Twizel?

We are a touring couple with car. Would love to know which is the preferable place to stay in order to see Mount Cook and that area. Is Twizel worth seeing? Some guidebooks say it is. Will be heading from there back to Christchurch at the end of 2 week trip to SI.

Stay at Mt. Cook. Do not expect to climb Mt. Cook, but you can take short hikes there (escorted or solo). I stayed at The Lodge at the foot of Mt. Cook recently.

The views when staying at Aoraki/Mt Cook are wonderful, while Twizel is a planned town planked in the middle of nowhere.

I suggest you stay at Aoraki and if that doesn't suit, then stay at Tekapo.

Definitely try and stay at Mt Cook....it is stunning. On the way there we spent about 10 minutes feeding Salmon at a Salmon farm just outside of Twizel (and then the Salmon fed us) and about 20 minutes at Twizel picking up some snacks. It's a tiny little town square....but Mt. Cook, OMG....what a place....it was so beautiful that I tried everything to get my husband to give up the campervan for a night and stay at the Hermitage Hotel (but I failed!) We met up with our tour group there and went on the Glacier Explorer tour....really well worth doing. We had a hot chocolate while sitting on the deck of the Hermitage after our tour and took in the views of Mt Cook towering above us. The drive in and out of Mt Cook were breath taking as well....we were lucky to have clear skies and could see all of the peaks of the surrounding mountains.

The sight of Aoraki Mt Cook as you pull back the curtains is guarenteed to be a "wow" moment. The top is usually cloud free in the moring and often covered in the PM.

Aoraki Mt Cook will be more expensive than Twizel. It's about a 40 minute drive. You could have an early dinner at Poppies (just inside Twizel) and drive to Aoraki after that. Tekapo is nice, but in the other direction. I have stayed there many times but given up on finding anywhere decent to eat.

I would worry about a guide book that described Twizel as interesting. If you are into fishing or rowing etc, it makes a great base. Otherwise you stop to stretch your legs.

Does anyone know if the prices at the Hermitage are likely to be dropped to last-minute rates? I really want to stay there on the 18th and 19th October - Is it worth waiting until a week beforehand in the hope of getting cheaper room rates if they can't sell them at the usual highly inflated prices?

if you are looking for budget accommodation, then you may find Twizel suits you best.

But if looking for accommodation in a stunning National Park then consider The Hermitage or the Lodge.

You will find lower rates on wotif but it probably won't be a room with a view www.wotif.com/search/Advanced…
