Most scenic day walk near Wanaka?

My husband and I will be spending 2 nights, so only one and a half days, in Wanaka in January, between Fox glacier and Te Anua. We will have a car, love hiking, 5-6 hours max, stunning scenery.

If we were to choose only one hike, which is an absolute must see? We are happy to climb as long as it's not on ice! Any suggestions please? I know it's not until next January but i am SO excited already. Thanks.

Rob Roy Glacier track. It's a bit of a drive from Wanaka, but the drive is as beautiful as the glacier itself.

The Rob Roy track is brilliant. However the road up the Matukituki valley is rough, its mostly gravel and full of natural judder bars. The scenery is great but be warned the road is hard on vehicles.

I love the drive to Rob Roy glacier more than the actual walk, but don't let the road deter you. It does get rutted at times and the last 6 to 10 km has no bridges across the many stream crossings. If there hasn't been any recent rain most of the streams will be low or dry. If it has rained the crossings could be impassable. Check with the DOC station in Wanaka, they have good maps plus up to date track and road conditions.

Enjoy :)

Rob Roy is lovely. As WL said, it's actually quite a drive to the head of the valley. Rob Roy climbs easily through forest and comes out in a basin with the glacier just above. Other options if it's a stunning day are Rocky Mountain (accessed from the Diamond Lake track about 15 minutes from Wanaka town. This gives good views of the Matukituki Valley, Lake Wanaka. The other option is the steep climb up Mt Roy (or Roys Peak). The track for this is only 10 minutes from town. It's a steep climb up - no down and only a little bit of along - but on a nice day gives stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains. It would be a couple of hours to the top. You can also go further along the ridge to neighbouring Mt Alpha - probably another hour. The Mt Alpha extension is more of a route - following poles - but very doable. We have done all these walks - and lots more - with our three kids (youngest is 7).

In summary, if the weather isn't so good, then Rob Roy is a good option - though Glacier views will be limited. It it's a nice day, then getting high for some extensive views would be a good option.

Enjoy!

Thank you all for taking the time to reply. These walks look exactly like what we were hoping for. Now to wait patiently til January, practicing our hiking in the beautiful mountains of Ireland.

We will be in Wanaka in the second week of July. Are these walks doable at this time of the year? If not, are there any other walks that can be done. We can manage 2-4 hours of walk.

Rob Roy could well have ice and/or snow issues in July - check with the DOC headquarters in Wanaka, they will know current conditions.

There are many great walking tracks to enjoy which have no ice issues through winter. Consider the Outlet Track alongside the Clutha River and the Millienium Track which winds along the lake edge and offers excellent views.

Mt Iron takes just 20 minutes to the top and offers excellent views.

Enjoy :)

Would a normal sedan be okay for the drive to Rob Roy or do we need a 4x4?

I am going in Dec.

A regular car is fine. It is a long drive on a gravel road, and there are several fords to cross. A regular car will be fine, except if there has been heavy rain and the fords are up. It's not the 4WD that is important, but the clearance between the ground and the underneath of the vehicle. Check with the Department of Conservation as to the weather/state of road and track before you leave Wanaka.
