Route options - Ella to Hikkaduwa

What is the best route to travel from Ella to Hikkaduwa considering the 1) distance, ) traffic/ road conditions, 3) scenic beauty, 4) places of interest.

Google map is throwing two options. One is an inland route, which seems ot be about 222 km. The other option is via Wellawaya and Galle, but seems much longer.

I understand Bandarawalla is an interesting stopover suggested by Erlk in one of his posts. Is that an option on the route?

We don't mind skipping Galle for for now, as we plan to visit the beaches and towns down south in our three night stay at Hikkaduwa.

Hi there,

Ella has such an impressive scenery that you can't improve much on it by whichever route you choose! As the Ella gap is tha main sight of the Wellawaya-Hambantota-Galle route, better pick the 'inland' one that Google proposes. With 222 km that will still be 6-7 hours drive at least. Bandarawela is quite close to Ella, hence in your plan not really useful as stopover.

All the best,

I would go via Bandarawela-Ratnapura-Bandaragama-Kalutara.
