Chumphon to Bangkok by train or bus.

Hi there,

We are trying to maximise our time on Koh Tao at the end of our trip by waking up there on Sat 16th April and arriving in Bangkok at a reasonable time in the evening. (Last time we did the Lomprayah ferry/bus combo in the afternoon & evening arriving Bangkok in the early hours and it felt like a waste of a day & night).

We are planning to leave Koh Tao on the 10:15 Lomprayah ferry arriving Chumphon at 11:45. I see there is the no. 40 train stopping at Chumporn at 12:46 which arrives in Bangkok at 19:45. This would be ideal. My concern is how long it takes to get from the Pier to the train station - is 1 hour enough? Happy to get a taxi if necessary.

I appreciate the ferry may be delayed so need a back up plan - my second question is are there frequent buses running between Chumphon and Bangkok incase we miss the train? I can't seem to find any bus timetables for the route in that direction.

Any help much appreciated, thanks.

Hi Eva,

I'm travelling with my sister around this time. Bangkok is our destination from Koh Tao and we originally planned to catch a 7h ferry to Hua Hin then bus or train in the morning to Bangkok (2.5h). However we decided we will catch the express ferry (Lomprayah Ferry) 14.30- arr 1700 to Chumpon and spend a couple of hours there before taking the overnight train to Bangkok (8h) to save travel time during the day. I personally prefer the train as you're not stuck in the same seat the whole way. However there are many reliable buses- the Chokeenan Tour VIP Bus is a reliable company which has been recommended by some of my friends that have travelled this route also.

Check out these websites which have timetables advising travel between Chumpon and Bangkok.

Hi Paula,

I will be travelling from Koh Tao to Bangkok and am interested in taking the same journey as you. Please could you let me know if you can book the train from Champon in advance and how I would be able to do this?

I think in order to be safe the best solution is the combo ferry (10.15) plus bus from Kho tao, it costs 1100 all included, with transfers, there will be a bus at the port in Chumphon and the bus will go directly to the centre of Bangkok (Khao Sao Road), at 20.30, this way there is no worry to miss anything as the ticket is a combinatio. I would have preferred the train but apparently they told me the first possible one leaves at 16.00 and takes a very long time to get to bangkok. Beware of timetables, they can often change for both buses and trains, that's why a combination like this is safe and direct and as for the price, it includes the transfer, so it is reasonably cheap.

Nok Air flies daily from Chumphon to Bangkok Don Muang at 07:15 and 21:20. They also offer Fly and Ride combinations to Koh Tao.

The danger of tagging a question onto the end of an old thread is that it revives old, obsolete information that ought to be dead and buried. In the future, please start a new thread to ask a new question.
