One day in St George

My cruise ship will dock for one day, I have never been to St. George, how can I discover the area, with a mix of beaches and sights to see.

Sort of depends on what you want to do. If you are a walker there are some great guided walks in the rain forest. Lakes, monkeys, etc.

You could also just walk around St Georges. A few stores, a fort with a nice view, charming looking waterfront.

If you are a gawker then get a tour from a local cabbie. Not sure if the cruise ship laid on ones would not be too crowded and a bit packaged. Mandoo or Chris tours can plan something with you. Spice plantations, petroglyphs, rum distilleries, great beaches. If you get far enough away like Bathaway Beach there will be almost no tourists.

If you are a lay on the beach sort, you decide crowded or not. Grand Anse Beach will absorb several cruise ships of tourists. Each beach further out gets about 50% less tourists. Crowds, bars, T shirt vendors stay with Grand Anse. Otherwise grab a cab to one a bit further along. Morne Rouge or Magazine. L'Ance Aux Epine very quiet and serene and calm. Bathaway open to the Atlantic and often rougher and windier.

Just a couple of ideas to add to the previous post - if you come off the ship and take the water taxi it will take you to Grand Anse beach. Where you get off the boat it will be a bit crowded (but still pleasant), I would walk along to the other end of the beach (away from St George's) towards the Flamboyant - beach there is excellent, will be quieter and you could have a fab beach bar lunch. If you are in St Georges then BB Crabbacks on the Carenage does a great snack lunch with fab views. Mind you , you may prefer to have a "free lunch" on the ship. Have a great time.

If you are looking for a quiet beach - there is also the Morne Rouge (or BBC) Beach which is further along from the Grand Anse Beach. As dwhopper said, it really does depend on what you like doing. It would be great to take a tour of the island - to the Grand Etang Rainforest; Waterfalls; River-tubing. There is also an Underwater Sculpture Park which is great for snorkelling - or you can visit one of the spice estates or processing stations. You can also take a look at the board of tourism's website and e-mail a couple of the local tour operators who will advise you on what you can do and what the cost will be. The website is: www.grenadagrenadines.com.
