surf and turf?

Just beginning our research here, but have been prowling around this forum a little..

Can anyone advise if it is reasonable to do Merida and Holbox in one trip?...and the logistics of such an adventure.

We usually allow about 2 weeks for a "relaxing" vacation and thought we may do some site-seeing in addition to Holbox. Have already explored Tulum, Coba, Tikal etc.

Thanks.

Yes, it's possible, and both places are worth seeing. You don't say if you are renting a car or planning on traveling via bus. There is only one bus per day between Merida and Chiquila. It leaves Merida at 11:30pm and arrives in Chiquila at 5:00am and then turns around and leaves for Merida at 5:30am, arriving at 11:00am.

Thanks IHX. That's good information.

We just purchased air late last night to Cancun.

At the moment we are thinking about doing a car rental and hitting Valladolid for 2 nights(do city and neighboring sites) and then to Merida for 2-4 nights which may include an overnight at Uxmal.

Then to chill some, get to Holbox for a week. In this way, we get the traffic stresses of the cities out of the way early.

The downside is that car sitting in Chiquila and the cost for that.

We may end up doing a little of both--driving and busing. If we reverse order, can we get to Chiquila by ferry from Holbox early enough in the AM to catch the bus to Merida?

Thanks also to smsa and sugarman . We've been reading some earlier posts about their trips to these locations.

Thank you IHX. I think that is good news.

Now, is it safe to assume that that bus in Chiquila is awaiting the Holbox ferry's passengers before it departs for Merida? or not.

This itinerary may be coming together, or not.

Yes, the buses wait. Without the incoming ferry passengers, the buses really don't have any clientele. Many Holboxenos have family in Merida and/or go to doctors there. There is no doctor on Holbox. It is also not unusual for high school age children to be living with family members in Merida during the week. The schools on Holbox end at 8th grade - primaria y secundaria.

Thanks again IHX. Your posts, current and archived, have been real helpful.

Is it necessary to have 2 seats reserved on the bus?Don't mind standing for a while, but not for 5 hours.

These are all 2nd class buses. I've never tried to reserve a seat on a 2nd class bus. Usually on 2nd class buses the passenger list in constant flux - people getting on and off at every little village. Usually you can snag a seat at some point even if you don't start out with one. Maybe Robert can answer this question. He rides buses much more often than I do.
