I have not been to mexico at all and have been thinking of traveling to Holbox next summer. Does anyone have a suggestion of how we can combine a trip to Holbox with something else so we can get our snorkel on?? We are avid snorkelers and have been to Belize, Bonaire and many places in the Caribbean, and although Holbox seeems like our perfect vacation place, nice and rustic, and quiet, it seems like ther is no other snorkeling to be had. So how can we combine two places cost effectively? Spending 4 days or so in Holbox and the same or more somewhere else? Thanks so much ahead of time for your help.

I'm a diver (and snorkeller) and Cozumel is one of our favorite places. You can either get a land transfer to Playa Del Carmen and then take the ferry over, or you can book a charter flight directly from Holbox to Cozumel. If Holbox seems like your kind of place, you'll love Cozumel.

Although, do watch out for the "cruise ship people".

Check www.cruisereport.com/PortsOfCall.aspx…

Sometimes there can be four, five, even six cruise ships in port - you'd want to avoid the snorkel trips that cater to the ships on those days.

2nd choice would be the Playa Del Carmen - Akumal - Tulum area. Again, if Holbox is your kind of place, you'd probably like Akumal or Tulum better than Playa Del Carmen. In addition to ocean snorkelling here there are many cenotes to snorkel/swim which are very cool.

We're planning for Holbox next summer too :-)

Have fun.

What about Isla Mujeres? Easy to get to from Cancun, and although it's not supposed to have the same tourist-free atmosphere as Holbox, it's supposed to be a nice, laid-back island with good snorkeling. You could head to Holbox or Mujeres, then return to Cancun and head to the other one!

Cozumel is a good place to snorkel but lots of cruise ship people.

Another laid back place is Puerto Morelos, just a short drive south of the Cancun Airport. It is a sleepy beach town with excellent snorkeling a 5 min boat ride off the dock.
