Fun ideas with older teens in Cape Ann and surrounding area

We are considering visiting in late July early August with our 18 year old and 14 year old. Are there areas we can kayak, hike, and/or other suggestions? What are some must-do/see recommendations?

Hi you could take a whale watch out of Gloucester ; a river cruise & kayaking in Essex, Crane Beach in Ipswich for a beach day . Plum Island is also a good beach but watch out for the under tow!

Thanks for these suggestions. Is this an area where we could rent bikes and ride around?

The following links may give you some ideas for bike rides. Caveat: I seldom cycle outside my neighborhood so haven't done any of these rides, but I'm familiar with all the areas described and they're beautiful.

Also, you can rent kayaks in Rockport, in addition to the rental place in Essex.

A few more ideas (unlike the cycling ones, these are based on personal experiences, some with teens):

Visit Halibut Point in Rockport. Go to both the rocky point and the old quarry.

Canoe on the Ipswich River:

If you hit a rainy day, consider a visit to the quirky Hammond Castle.

Have fun!

I think someone else mentioned Halibut Point on Cape Ann -- it's the northern point of the cape, and it's well worth a visit. There are great views, and huge rocks to walk across. There is an old stone quarry which is cool to see.

The Paper House might also be fun -- a quirky thing to see in Rockport.

And of course there is all the usual stuff in Salem.

In Marblehead there are remnants of an old fort on the coast, not all that well publicized.

Getting our itinerary planned now. Thanks for all of these great ideas.

Are there any boats - sunset cruises, whale watching, schooners, etc, that you recommend?

Over the years, I've probably been out on whale watches with all the companies in Gloucester. They're all fine and all go to the same area. I seem to use Yankee Fleet most of the time.

Though I've never been, I have several friends who have really enjoyed a sail on the Schooner Thomas Lannon. Their schedule includes sunset cruises.

The Essex River Cruise mentioned by Kendrick above offers a very scenic trip. I love it, but wonder if teens might find it a little too tame. It's especially refresshing on a hot, humid day.

Hope you'll enjoy!

One more idea if you're around on a Thursday evening: A Picnic Concert at Castle Hill in Ipswich. Arrive early so you have a little time to explore the beautiful grounds of the Crane Estate (and to assure that you get in--space is limited). These are fun no matter what music is playing.
