Driving outside Boston for a day -- any suggestions?

My wife and I are planning a visit to Boston and the Cape in mid September. We're planning on spending 2 days in Boston and then thought of heading north for one night before we head back south to Chatham on the Cap for 4 nights. Based on the Forum, we thought we'd take the car north to Salem and then overnight in Gloucester before we then drive the 2.5 hours back through Boston and then on to Chatham.

What do you think? Does this route make sense? Is it worth it divert through Salem for a few hours before we then overnight in Gloucester? We're entirely flexible.

Thanks.

That will work. The detour to Salem won't add much driving time to your day. From Salem, take the coastal route to Gloucester, which will take an extra 15 minutes or so over the highway option, not counting any stops you make along the way. Take Route 1A north from Salem to Beverly where you pick up Route 127 north; then continue on to Gloucester. At some point finish the Route 127/127A loop around Gloucester. Very scenic. Enjoy!

Agree with Route128, sounds like a nice plan, but make sure to take a stroll thru Bearskin Neck in Rockport, too.

Don't want to make you drive too much but there is something appealing about getting Ipswich clams in Ipswich or Wellfleet oysters in Wellfleet.

Essex clams at an Essex restaurant would be a good idea, too! ;-)

In clam society, the Essexes speak only to Ipswiches, and the Ipswiches speak only to God.
