General questions

Hi all,

A group of us are hoping to head down to the Outer Banks next spring or summer. None of us have been there before. There'll be anywhere from 10 to 20 of us, all in our mid to late thirties, with a couple of little ones (under 2). We aren't looking for any wild nights out -- mostly just want to be on the water, hang out, grill, and relax. Any suggestions of particular houses to rent? Or particular communities that would be better suited for us? Finally, is there a black fly or horsefly season? We have some nasty greenheads (biting flys with green heads) up this way that really could but a damper on a vacation so we'd like to stay away from whenever that season is on the Outer Banks if there is one. Any help you all can give is much appreciated :)

We just got back from our first trip to the Outer Banks--loved it! we wanted a quiet, laid back, walk to the beach kind of place and rented a house in Salvo. We were really happy with the area, not at all touristy but with enough going on to keep four teenagers and two adults happy. We took day trips to Ocracoke and the Kitty Hawk area.

We used Outer Beaches Realty and they were wonderful to deal with and we got lots of helpful info from this site too.

Good luck--I cant wait to go back!

We rent a home every summer in the Outer Banks and love it. We look forward to that vacation each year, it is so relaxing just to chill by the pool or ocean. We like to stay in Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head area. It is centrally located and has all the amenities and necessities such as grocery stores, entertainment, restaurants, etc. We use www.joelambjr.com, three different houses and have been very happy with them. Have Fun!

Hi! We've been going down to Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head since 1991 with a group of about 20 or more people every year. Have enjoyed every year. Our group has changed since 1991, folks ahve gotten engaged while at OBX, have had to skip a year or 2 for new home purchase and weddings. But now the group that started with no kids has change into familes and now pre-teens. It's been fun watching the changes and each year looking forward to our time in OBX. You'll have a wonderful time. Something for everyone and very relaxing. I agree to stay in the Kill Devil (bigger beaches then Kitty Hawk), to Nags Head to South Nags Head area. Closer to stores and eateries of all kinds. Beaches are GREAT! Water is warm, (we go Labor day week)! We have been renting through www.carolinadesigns.com each year and have never had a complaint. Anything needing fixing, we immediately call and it's corrected. Enjoy your time!

Most people on this site are going to talk about the Kitty Hawk/Nags Head/Kill Devil Hills area...that is great if you need alot to do but from what you're saying you should drive just a little further south to Hatteras Island. HI is exactly what you are describing. Truely any of the villages down there will fit your needs.

Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo is the first area you come to and this area has seen alot of growth in recent years. There is just enough to do there and there are alot of newer, really nice homes to choose from.

Next in line is Avon which is largest of the villages on HI. It is the only one with a major grocery store. Enough good restraunts and alot of homes to pick from.

My favorite area is the next down...Buxton/Friso. This is where the Hatteras Light is. There isn't as many newer homes to choose from on the ocean but there are some super-nice places on the sound. Fishing is typically better around this area

Finally you have Hatteras village. This area has some of the nicest, newer homes on the ocean. Down around the Ocracoke ferry is where most of them are located. Fishing is usually good in this area as well.

I like using Hatteras Realty but OBR is good as well. Hope this info is useful. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

Thank you all so much for your replies and helpful information. Maddog, you pegged us right -- really looking for places that are less developed, so we will look into the villages you suggested.

Does anyone have experience with the bug situation? When is the season for anything that bites the worst?

thanks again.

We stayed in Rodanthe (Corbina Drive, Oceanfront) in the spring and didn't have problems with bugs. This was our first trip to the Outer Banks and we loved staying on Hatteras Island. We used Midgett Realty and highly recommend them.

General rule down there is...if the wind is blowing the bugs ain't bitting. If there is no wind then its time to be concerned.

check out www.carolinadesigns.com to rent a house.

We just stayed Aug 4-11 No flies but it was HOT!

in a great new house in Southern Shores. The house had 7 brs, 6 had king size beds, one had two bunks, 9 tv/dvd combos, a huge kitchen living area, the table let all of us eat together, we had 14 adults, 3 kids and two dogs, elevator, pool hot tub, game room with pool table, every bedroom had their own bathroom except the bunk bed room and br had their own sliding glass door to the deck or private area. we split it by 6 families and it cost each family under $1000 (which included hurrican einsurance and the local taxes)

We've rented houses twice in Avon - once through Outer Beaches and once through Surf or Sound - both times very goodexperiences. We went in Augustand never encountered problems w/bugs.

Avon is great - quiet but great restaurants - it's all about the beach though. I strongly recommend trip to Ocrakoke - nice ferry ride and even better beaches!! I also recommend spending the extra for an oceanfromt or at least semi-oceanfront home - one with three levels for the views Still trying to find the perfect house - some need beds etc replacing and the second time we had trouble with neighbors partying all night - unusual from what I hear

It's a fabulous place - enjoy!!

We just returned from Corolla/Corova area up north. The surf was awesome and the water fantastic at all times. We stayed away from the main part of town - you need a four wheel drive to get to our neighborhood on the beach. I did see many families with yougsters on the beach, but I do not know how they managed to relax. Reasons being both the undertow/rip tides were ripping (you could dig your feet in and still be moved upright along the rip tides) and the 4 wheelers. The 4 wheelers use the hard packed sand of the beach as a road. So between where you sit and where you swim, there is a steady stream of traffic. This is okay and not bothersome for adults, but I got gray hair watching (other people's) kids and dogs as they scampered out of the surf. Most everyone drives slowly and considerately, but watch for the occasional yahoo who has been drinking all day or is just a speed freak to start with. The stars and solitude at night are magnificent. Have fun! It is addictive!
