Looks like you have two basic choices. Either US 15S to I 95S and around DC, or I 476S and down the Delmarva to the Eastern Shore. My preference would be the Eastern Shore because I dislike the DC area.
There are lots of hotels in Williamsburg, but that won't work if you take the Eastern Shore route.
If you do, or if you want to go farther than Williamsburg, Google Chesapeake VA motels and focus on those near the intersection of I 64 and VA 168, Chesapeake Expressway. Williamsburg is about 2:30 from Kitty Hawk, Chesapeake is about 1:30.
When are you coming?
Play around with google maps a bit. It will help you. YOu can drag the route around. If you are leaving on a saturday try and avaid the DC area all together. Try in interstate 81 and then cut accross I64 avoiding the DC area. it is longer on the maps but you will save time in traffic.
Take a look at interstate 81 at Winchester to 66 East to 17 South which will take you to Fredericksburg at Route 95. From there you can head toward Williamsburg or Va Beach.
^^^ I have done the route above. It is good as well.
Thank you all so much for your feedback, it is greatly appreciated.
Does anyone have feedback on how the suggested routes are to drive in daylight vs the night. More specifically, would you avoid any of these routes while driving at night, due to safety? Thank you again!
I must agree with Dreameyes I travel in both direction from Va up 81 to Canada and from Va to OBX . 81 is your best bet and no tolls this way as 95 from NY to DC is full of them and slow down to pay too.
Personally I like several other routs from 95 in Fredericksburg Va depending on what I want to see.. Va beach is a good stop over we usually do that then going to Knotts Island NC in the morning to take the ferry over to 158 you can look at this site it gives you several options using 81 as a starting point
