If you're looking for restaurants and nightlife, look at Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, or Kitty Hawk. There are alot of restaurants and some bar restaurants, although, I don't know if there is really much night life on the OBX. Always stay at the rental in the evenings enjoying a few drinks on the deck (or in the hot tub).

Jockey's Ridge is also right there. Climb the dune and enjoy the view.

First week of May is a great time to go (we do that every year). Weather is usually in the 70's and the crowds are low.

I concur. We stayed at the Sea Foam Motel in Nags Head. The beach was perfect, with a nice dune right in the motel's back yard. We were within walking distance of a few restaurants and a short drive to others. We hit Sam and Omie's for breakfast and Owens, South Beach Grille and the Blue Moon Beach Grille for dinner, and while we weren't necessarily there for the bar scene, both South Beach and Blue Moon had a casual fun vibe and fantastic food. All in all, it was a great area and a great time.

Not many visitors are here early May so empty beaches will not be a problem to find everywhere. KDH and Nags Head will have the most choices for things to do.
