We are on the coast so nature is 360° all around. We have no woods or mountains so I am confused by your request to be near nature. Quiet with less commercial places would suggest Ocracoke, Hatteras Island or Corova in the 4x4 area for you. The 4x4 area is way up rt 12 past Corolla which on a Saturday will be a horrible long parking lot moving north. If you go anywhere here I suggest coming on a Sunday to avoid the majority of tourists who come on Saturday (for some reason) to avoid lines on the bridge and the 40 mile 15 mph drive north.

Define an area that would not be family oriented at the beach?

"Define an area that would not be family oriented at the beach?" . . . Coquina Beach?

Sounds like this person is after Hatteras/Ocracoke as best choice destination.

Even streets that have families are pretty quiet. Kids are exhausted by the end of the day so they are all in bed! The noisiest streets seem to be with young adults playing b-ball in the driveway or volley ball on the lawn and the after party that goes with it. There is enough space between houses and they are so well constructed that it is quiet inside most of the time! I have never experiences the sounds like.....say Jersey shore at night.

How about 1,000 acres of old growth Outer Banks....marshes, ponds, woods, animals. Click on this link for Nags Head Woods Ecological Woods protected by the Nature Conservancy.

Then google map this address to get your bearings and research what rentals you might find near the Woods:

Susan, what do you mean by "not family oriented"?
