First time in Outer Banks. Advice appreciated.

We are a family of four -- twin boy and girl will be turning 13 while we're on vacation. :).

We vacation every year in Kure Beach, but this year want to add a few days in the Outer Banks so our kids can learn more about the Wright Brothers and the history of flight. We will be coming in probably on Labor Day and would like to spend four or five nights in OBX. Where would you recommend we stay? Mom and Dad really enjoy the beach, but the kids want things to do. Museums, arcades , boardwalks, mini-golf, day trips, ferries, etc. What would be a good central location that would put us near activities for the kids, but still offer a nice, quiet beach town for mom and dad? What things would you recommend we do and see in the area?

We will be looking for an oceanfront rental -- nothing luxurious, we just need it to be clean, have wonderful views, and WiFi so we can stay connected to our offices. I would welcome suggestions for vacation rentals. Also, will we be able to rent a partial week after Labor Day?

Thanks for any and all input.

first there are no board walks, nothing like that. It is not like a long business area where you park and wonder around from this place to that place all in a row. Maybe the Manteo waterfront is like that with its little shops all over but that is the only place like that. Other places you will need to drive here, drive there. There are more things to do in Kill Devil Hills than anyplace else with Nags Head 2nd. KDH is where the Wright Bros museum is and you will want to visit there. There is a nice aquarium in Manteo next to the airport.

Partial weeks are available but you have to rent it that week or the Saturday before whatever days you will want. You won't save all that much but they will be available.

Take a day trip to Hatteras and over the ferry to Ocracoke and another day trip over to Manteo and being in a central area like KDH or Nags Head makes it easy. Kitty Hawk, KDH and Nags Head are each 5 miles long and run from one to the other so from one end to the other is just 15 miles so you are not far from anything if you are there.

Thanks for your reply. We'll have our car so don't mind driving to various activities. We're just not certain which area of OBX is more concentrated with things to do besides quiet beach town. It sounds like KDH or Nags Head would be our best bet then? Can anyone recommend reputable rental companies?

Village Realty, Twiddy and Joe Lamb are all very good companies Village and Joe Lamb probably have more rentals in your areas of interest though.

KDH and Nag's Head with kids is probably the best choice ... that will be closest to various family oriented activities. If you're thinking of renting a place for the week, I recommend Joe Lamb as we've used them numerous times but there are various others which are all reputable. Find a place with Ocean Front (on the beach) or Ocean View (on the beach road) for easiest access to the beach.

You'll find all rentals are typically week long engagements -- so if you want less time, you'll probably need to go with a hotel/motel instead.
