Ocracoke ferry info

We will be in Corolla in 2 weeks and planning a trip down to ocracoke, most likely on a Tuesday. I've read about long lines and waits for the ferry, but are they just for people looking to bring their vehicle? We weren't planning to bring our vehicle, just walk on and then rent a golf Cart on the island. Any idea on what kind of wait we'd see on a tues around 10-11 am?

It is a 12 mile or so hike into the village where they rent the carts. Better take your vehicle and leave early. The ferry is running the longer route this summer.

What DOBX says is right you want get to the ferry Early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the crowd is coming back. . They try to keep up heavy flow of traffic and ad on ferry's as needed if they have them

The wait isn't usually more then a hour if that long and there is a shopping center at the ferry docks . So you get a little shopping done and keeping an eye on loading

All true, the wait is not that bad, but it is a long drive from Corolla so you would have to leave pretty early. If you are determined not to bring the car, maybe you could bring bikes, and bike the 12 miles to the village.

Thanks everyone for the advice. We plan on leaving Corolla by 7 am the latest. Didn't realize the distance from docks to village would be so far, so we will bring the vehicle.

7 AM from Corolla should be fine - that will get you down there by about 9:00 AM (give or take). If you change plans on the date, keep it during the week (less traffic - especially from Corolla to Hattaras). We usually do a day trip from Duck every other year - just get up early, grab some coffee and hit the road.

The ferry dock on Ocracoke from Hatteras is on the opposite end of the island from the town so, yeah - car is the way to go.
